Sonya Balmores (born June 23, 1986) is an American actress, model, and surfer from Kalaheo, Hawaii who also competed in the Miss Teen USA pageant. [1]

Contents

Early life and education

Balmores was born to a Filipino father and a mother of Irish and Native American descent. [2] She attended Kalaheo Elementary School and graduated from Kauai High School. [3] She was a visual communications student at Hawaii Pacific University. [1]

Modeling career

Balmores won the Miss Hawaii Teen USA title on May 16, 2004 at the Waikiki Sheraton Resort. [4] Balmores represented Hawaii in the Miss Teen USA 2004 pageant held in Palm Springs, California on August 6, 2004. She placed first runner-up in the pageant, which was won by Miss Louisiana Teen USA Shelley Hennig. [5] This was Hawaii's highest placement in the pageant since Kelly Hu won in 1985.

In 2005, Balmores appeared on the covers of Women's Health, Outside and Foam magazines. [1]

Acting career

Balmores played the series regular role Kai Kealoha in Beyond the Break on The N, a series previously given the tentative title Boarding School. [6] She also played the main antagonist, Malina Birch, in the 2011 film Soul Surfer . [7] In 2014, she guest starred on Hawaii Five-0 as tour bus robber Alana Duncan the episode " Kanalu Hope Loa" or "The Last Break". In 2017, Balmores was cast in the series Inhumans as Auran. [8]

Miss Teen USA is a beauty pageant that has been run since 1983 by the Miss Universe Organization for girls aged 14–19 years old as of January 1st of the competition year. They must be US citizens, and cannot have been married, pregnant, or have children. Unlike its sister pageants Miss Universe, which currently broadcasts on JKN18 and like its sister pageant Miss USA, it is televised on The CW television network starting in 2024, after being streamed online for several years. The Miss Universe Organization previously operated Miss Teen USA, as well as Miss USA, until 2020 when the rights to produce both pageants were licensed to Miss USA 2008 Crystle Stewart prior to her suspension in October 2022, thus returning the said pageants to the Miss Universe Organization.
