Sorry House is an independent, small press publishing company based in Brooklyn, New York that was founded by writer Spencer Madsen in 2012. Sorry House publishes poetry and fiction in print only. [1]
Sorry House's debut publication was I will never be beautiful enough to make us beautiful together by Mira Gonzalez. It was released on 31 January 2013. [2] Gonzalez is a close friend of Madsen, and the editing process was notably intimate. [3] The book was named a Dazed poetry book of the week, [4] a Flavorwire book of the year, [5] and was excerpted at Vice . [6] It was a finalist for both the Goodreads Choice Award [7] and Believer Poetry Award. [8]
That same year Sorry House published Joke Book by Victor Vazquez. [9]
In July 2014, Dazed named Sorry House one of "10 US Presses that don't play by the rules" alongside Publishing Genius, Wave Books, and Coffee House Press. [10]

Mary Ruefle is an American poet, essayist, and professor. She has published many collections of poetry, the most recent of which, Dunce, was longlisted for the National Book Award in Poetry and was a finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize. He has been a Fulbright Scholar, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, a finalist for the National Book Award, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, a Howard Foundation Fellow, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a MacArthur Fellow, among other honors. In 2011 he won the "Preis der Stadt Münster für internationale Poesie", the first American to receive the honor. Lerner teaches at Brooklyn College, where he was named a Distinguished Professor of English in 2016.
Charles Chowkai Yu is an American writer. He is the author of the novels How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe and Interior Chinatown, as well as the short-story collections Third Class Superhero and Sorry Please Thank You. In 2007 he was named a "5 under 35" honoree by the National Book Foundation. In 2020, Interior Chinatown won the National Book Award for fiction.
Jake Adam York was an American poet. He published three books of poetry before his death: Murder Ballads, which won the 2005 Elixir Prize in Poetry; A Murmuration of Starlings, which won the 2008 Colorado Book Award in Poetry; and Persons Unknown, an editor's selection in the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry. A fourth book, Abide, was released posthumously, in 2014. That same year he was also named a posthumous recipient of the Witter Bynner Fellowship by the U.S. Poet Laureate.

Mira Gonzalez is an American poet. Her first collection, i will never be beautiful enough to make us beautiful together, was published by Spencer Madsen of Sorry House press on January 31, 2013. According to Liza Darwin in Nylon magazine, Gonzalez is part of a "whole new crop of cool girl poets" whose work is "clever, totally unfiltered, and peppered with twisted insight and refreshing humor." She has been published in magazines including Vice, Hobart, and Muumuu House. In 2015, Gonzalez and Tao Lin released Selected Tweets, a collaborative double-book featuring selections from three of her Twitter accounts, as well as visual art and "extras". In 2015, the singer Lily Allen posted an image of her hand above Gonzalez's i will not be beautiful enough... book of poems, which led to speculation that the singer's marriage was on shaky ground. Gonzalez has described her writing process as follows:
I will spend hours on one sentence sometimes, and if I feel that sentence isn’t expressing exactly what I want it to express, I will delete the sentence entirely. I think it takes a lot of precision and tedious work.
Chris Hosea is an American poet. Hosea earned his BA in English from Harvard University. He earned his MFA in Poetry from the University of Massachusetts Amherst's MFA Program for Poets & Writers. Pulitzer Prize-winning poet John Ashbery selected Hosea's first poetry collection, Put Your Hands In, for the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets. Ashbery, in his judge's citation for the Walt Whitman Award, wrote that Hosea's poetry "somehow subsumes derision and erotic energy and comes out on top...One feels plunged in a wave of happening that is about to crest."
Spencer Madsen is a contemporary American poet and small press publisher. He is a Brooklyn-based contemporary writer as well as the founding editor of Sorry House, an independent publishing press in New York City. Madsen is part of a genre of independent poetry that is unique in its association with the New Sincerity movement as well as its use of social media platforms as its main source of publicity. He is described by The Fader magazine as "a writer who will, with equal enthusiasm, tweet a selfie of his butt and write the sincerest, saddest line of poetry you've ever read."
Brooklyn Arts Press (BAP) is an independent publisher of poetry, literary fiction, non-fiction, art books, and music. The company was founded in 2007 by writer Joe Pan in Brooklyn, New York. In 2015, the small press was compared to Radiohead and Louis CK for running a promotional sale that allowed readers to pay whatever they wanted for a new Noah Eli Gordon paperback book, leading to local and international speculation as to whether the campaign would be instrumental in changing how poetry books are sold in the US. In 2016, Daniel Borzutzky's book The Performance of Becoming Human, published by BAP that April, won the National Book Award for Poetry.
