Sound Devices is an American corporation headquartered in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, with additional offices in Madison, Wisconsin and Rickmansworth, UK. [1] Sound Devices designs and manufactures professional audio and video equipment.

History

The company was founded in 1998 by Matt Anderson, Jon Tatooles, Jim Koomar, and Brad Lovett who previously worked for Shure. [2] The company specializes in portable equipment for location sound and video recording. [3]

Sound Devices products have been used for many well-known films, including Birdman [4] and Batman: The Dark Knight , [5] and TV shows, including Doctor Who [6] and Breaking Bad [7]

In 2018 Sound Devices announced the acquisition of Audio Limited, a UK manufacturer of wireless microphone systems.

In October, 2021, Sound Devices was acquired by the Audiotonix Group. [8]

TASCAM is the professional audio division of TEAC Corporation, headquartered in Santa Fe Springs, California. TASCAM established the Home Recording phenomenon by creating the "Project Studio" and is credited as the inventor of the Portastudio, the first cassette-based multi-track home studio recorders. TASCAM also introduced the first low-cost mass-produced multitrack recorders with Simul-Sync designed for recording musicians, and manufactured reel-to-reel tape machines and audio mixers for home recordists from the early 1970s through the mid-1990s. Whirlwind USA is a manufacturer of audio interfacing equipment and custom audio interfacing, including digital products that employ the EtherSound standard. Smaart is a suite of audio and acoustical measurements and instrumentation software tools introduced in 1996 by JBL's professional audio division. It is designed to help the live sound engineer optimize sound reinforcement systems before public performance and actively monitor acoustical parameters in real time while an audio system is in use. Most earlier analysis systems required specific test signals sent through the sound system, ones that would be unpleasant for the audience to hear. Smaart is a source-independent analyzer and therefore will work effectively with a variety of test signals including speech or music.

Aviom is a pro audio equipment manufacturer of personal monitoring systems. Headquartered in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Aviom produces distributed audio networking gear which uses a proprietary digital audio transport system called A-Net, based on the physical layer of Ethernet and carried over Category 5 cables terminated with 8P8C connectors. DPA Microphones is a Danish manufacturer of condenser microphones and microphone solutions for the professional markets, owned by the Italian private equity fund, Palladio Holding S.p.A. The current CEO is Kalle Hvidt Nielsen. The company was founded in 1992 by two former employees from Brüel & Kjær - Morten Støve and Ole Brøsted Sørensen. Brüel & Kjaer had decided to close their Pro Audio department and Morten and Ole made a contract with B&K to take over sales, service and development. DPA was at that time solely supplying high end studio microphones for recording and broadcast use. Dave Pensado is a Grammy Award-winning mix engineer. His career began in Atlanta in the 1970s and 1980s doing live and studio sound engineering. He has lived in Los Angeles since 1990.

Zoom H5 Handy Recorder is a handheld digital audio recorder from Zoom Corporation, introduced in January 2014. A successor to the Zoom H4n, the new model features interchangeable input capsules with microphones, allowing the recording of up to four tracks simultaneously, both internal and external.

Lenise Diane Bent is an American audio engineer who has worked in both the music and film industry. She was one of a handful of women working in the Hollywood recording studio business in a technical role during the 1970s, and was the first woman to receive an RIAA Platinum album for her engineering of AutoAmerican by Blondie.
