The South African Horrorfest is a film festival for horror and genre films in Cape Town, South Africa. [1] It hosts celebrities, artists, filmmakers, screenwriters, and press from the horror genre. [2]

Contents

It is the longest running and only event of its kind in South Africa and the African continent. [3] [4] Moviemaker lists it as one of the "world's 50 best genre festivals 2021". [5] The festival features new, classic and rare movies, pre-release screenings, dark literature, live silent film soundtrack performance, Halloween dress-up, give-aways and more. [6]

History

The South African Horrorfest was founded in 2005 by Paul Blom and Sonja Ruppersberg. [7] [8]

The festival is held annually around Halloween at the Labia Theatre Cape Town and is a permanent fixture in the arts calendar of Cape Town. [9] [10]

The Lullaby is a 2017 South African horror film directed by Darrell Roodt and co-produced by Samuel Frauenstein and Andre Frauenstein Snr. The film stars Reine Swart with Thandi Puren, Brandon Auret, Deànré Reiners, and Dorothy Ann Gould in supporting roles. The film tells the story of 19-year-old mom, Chloe van Heerden, who struggled to dealing with her super critical mother, Ruby, where she finally ends in a paranoia that sends Chloe into a dark depression. This is the first purely South African film production to release theatrically in the USA. Rotten Tomatoes ranked the film as the 17th Best Horror Movie for 2018.

Razzennest is a 2022 Austrian supernatural, satirical horror film written and directed by Johannes Grenzfurthner. The film was produced by art group monochrom.
