The South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA Awards) are an annual award ceremony. SATMA Awards are about celebrating music made in the style of the people and various language groups of South Africa. Founded by Dumisani Goba, The awards aim to "eliminate tribalism and other divisive measures"; the official slogan is "My Culture, Your Culture, One Nation". [1] [2]

Contents

The National Heritage Council were fundraisers and overseers for the SATMAs from 2008-2010; this role was then taken over by the SATMA Awards Foundation.

The Tsonga people are a Bantu ethnic group primarily native to Southern Mozambique and South Africa. They speak Xitsonga, a Southern Bantu language. Zulu music has dominated many genres in South Africa, especially house music, folk music, acapella, choral music and gospel. In fact, some of the most popular songs from South Africa are in isiZulu.

The Pedi or Bapedi - also known as the Northern Sotho, Basotho ba Lebowa, bakgatla ba dithebe, Transvaal Sotho, Marota, or Dikgoshi - are a Sotho-Tswana ethnic group native to South Africa, Botswana, and Lesotho that speak Pedi or Sepedi, which is one of the 12 official languages in South Africa. They are primarily situated in Sekhukhune in Limpopo.

The Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards were established in c.1980 by Maskew Miller Longman, an educational publishing company in South Africa. The competition was created to encourage writing in all of South Africa's 11 official languages, with a particular focus on literature suitable for a youth audience.

Izingane Zoma are a Maskandi group from Nquthu, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa formed in 1993. Their politically inspired songs have attracted wide discussion and chart success in their home country. This vocal trio has enjoyed a string of gold and platinum-level record sales in the South African market. The group were SATMA nominees in 2011, in the category of Best Video.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bhekumuzi Luthuli</span> South African Maskandi Artist

Bhekumuzi Luthuli was a well known South African Maskandi musician. Born in Kwa-Maphumulo, near the Kwa-Zulu Natal town of Stanger, he started making traditional Zulu music on a home-made guitar. In the early 1980s, he joined the Mbaqanga band Oshimi, based in Durban. After two albums with the group, Luthuli embarked on a successful solo career. His second and third solo releases, Unembeza and Wongikhonzela Enhliziyweni, won OKTV awards, and were followed by another 17 albums. Impempe attained platinum status, selling over 50,000 copies.

Thokozani Langa is a Maskandi musician from Mahlabathini, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.

Ntokozo Zakwe is a South African rapper born in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal.

Mukengerwa Tresor Riziki, best known by his stage name Tresor, is a Congolese-born singer, songwriter, music producer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He gained prominence in 2015 after releasing his single "Mount Everest" from his debut album, VII. His name "Tresor", when translated from French, means "treasure".

Yolanda Nyembezi, professionally known as Yallunder is a South African singer and songwriter. Born and raised in Bizana, Eastern Cape, Nyambezi signed her first record deal with 1020 Cartel, released her EP Uthando Lwam in 2020.

Shwi no Mtekhala is a South African maskandi duo formed in late 1990's. The group was composed of Mandla Xaba and Zwelenduna Rodgers Magubane.

Khuzani Nkosikhona Innocent Mpungose professionally known as Khuzani is a South African singer. Born and raised in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, he rose to prominence after participating in Mgqumeni's album iSecret 2010.Khuzani is considered as the King of Maskandi after the passing of the most famous Legends of Maskandi. He is also the Multi Award Winning Maskandi Artist in the world

Mlungisi Khuzani Ndlovu, professionally known as uGatsheni is a South African singer. Born and raised in Pongola, KwaZulu-Natal. His musical career began in 2012 at the age of 22.

<i>Umsebenzi</i> 2020 EP by Sjava

Umsebenzi is an extended play by South African singer-songwriter and rapper Sjava. It was released on 4 December 2020 through 1020 Cartel. It features guest appearance from Ami Faku, and Ndabo Zulu.
