South Dakota Magazine is a bi-monthly magazine publication that explores the culture, events, history, characters, landscape and communities of South Dakota. Bernie Hunhoff founded the magazine in 1985 after several years in the newspaper business,. [1] His daughter, Katie Hunhoff, is now the editor and publisher. The magazine has also produced several books featuring South Dakota stories, photography, and interesting places.

The magazine headquarters are located at 410 E 3rd St in Yankton, South Dakota, in a historic brick building built in the 1870s by Dakota Territorial Governor John L. Pennington.

Bernie Hunhoff and South Dakota Magazine have been recognized with numerous awards for their efforts in promoting South Dakota, including the 2011 A.H. Pankow Award [2] and the South Dakota Humanities Council's award for Distinguished Achievement in the Humanities. [3]

In 1988, Bernie Hunhoff published Uniquely South Dakota with Robert Karolevitz, a prolific Yankton, South Dakota author and journalist. [4] The coffee table book features many photographs.

Mike Stevens is an American politician and a Republican member of the South Dakota House of Representatives representing District 18 since January 12, 2021. Stevens also served in the South Dakota House of Representatives from 2013 to 2019, where he was elected House Majority Whip on November 15, 2014. Stevens served as the chairman of the Judiciary Committee during his first tenure in the South Dakota House of Representatives. Stevens also served on the Yankton School Board for 21 years and was the former president of the South Dakota Trial Lawyers.

Bernie P. Hunhoff is an American politician and a former Democratic member of the South Dakota Senate representing District 18 from 1993 to 1999 and 2015 to 2017. Hunhoff was also a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives for District 18 from 2009 to 2015. He served as the House minority leader during that time.

Raymond Henry Hamann was an American professional basketball player and college coach. By playing in the National Basketball League for the Oshkosh All-Stars during the 1937–38 and 1938–39 seasons, Hamann became the first South Dakotan to play organized professional basketball. He also competed for the All-Stars when they were a barnstorming independent team.
