South London Swimming Club is one of the largest swimming clubs in the UK.[ citation needed ] Based at Tooting Bec Lido, South-West London, the club swim outdoors all year round.
Tooting Bec Lido is one of Britain's oldest lidos: it was built in just four months in the spring of 1906. It did not become a 'lido' until the thirties - when the term became widely used - it was originally known as Tooting Bathing-Lake. [1]
Within weeks of the pool opening in 1906, a group of swimmers got together and formed the South London Swimming Club. The club made the pool its headquarters and ever since has played a major role in the life of the Lido.
During the 1990s, the club ran the lido off-season and continues to give practical voluntary help to both the council and its leisure contractor, DC Leisure Management Ltd.
To celebrate both its and Tooting Bec Lido's centenary in 2006, the South London Swimming Club hosted several events including the first UK Cold Water Swimming Championships in January and a 3-day film festival, Dive in Movies, in July.

Brockwell Lido is a large lido in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. Two ex council employees Paddy and Casey took on the running of the Lido for the community. Lambeth council gave Paddy & Casey a peppercorn lease rate from 1994–2001. Lambeth gave them a one-year extension in 2002 whilst a public consultation was held to decide on the longer term sustainable future of the Lido.

Mike Taylor, also known by the alias Taylor MH, is an English athlete, public speaker, and author from Stourbridge, England. After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) at the age of 26, he became the first person with MS to successfully swim a relay of the English Channel in 1997. Despite being unable to use his legs, he later completed a swimming relay of Loch Lomond in Scotland, a relay from Majorca to Menorca in the Balearic Islands, and three team relays from Santa Catalina Island to Santa Monica in California. In each case he raised funds to donate to non-profits such as the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Myelin Research Project. He also founded the MS charity foundation Turning the Tides (TTT). Taylor is a frequent public speaker and has announced that he is releasing his memoir Making a Splash on History Publishing in 2012.
