Björn Rune Borg is a Swedish former world No. 1 tennis player widely considered to be one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Between 1974 and 1981 he became the first man in the Open Era to win 11 Grand Slam singles titles, although he was never able to win the US Open in four finals appearances. He also won three year-end championships and 16 Grand Prix Super Series titles. Overall, he set numerous records that still stand. Borg was the first player to win six French Open singles titles. He is considered to have been the No. 1 player in the world for 1977, 1978,1979 and 1980.

Vincent O'Brien was an Irish race horse trainer from Churchtown, County Cork, Ireland. In 2003 he was voted the greatest influence in horse racing history in a worldwide poll hosted by the Racing Post. In earlier Racing Post polls he was voted the best ever trainer of national hunt and of flat racehorses. He trained six horses to win the Epsom Derby, was twice British champion trainer in flat racing and also twice in national hunt racing, won three Grand Nationals in succession and trained the only British Triple Crown winner, Nijinsky, since the Second World War. Henry Rono is a Kenyan retired track and field athlete who specialised in various long-distance running events. It relocated to western New York in 1979 and was renamed the Rochester International in 1982; it later became the Wegman's LPGA, played through 2009, until replaced by the Wegman's LPGA Championship.

The event was the New Zealand Airlines Classic in 1975 and 1976 and the New Zealand Airlines Open in 1977. The Grange hosted the first and final editions of the event but Titirangi Golf Course hosted the event the most, 14 times between 1977 - 1991. The only other courses to host the event were Russley Golf Club (1976) and Royal Wellington Golf Club (1979).

In 1982 the Commercial Bank of Australia, which has sponsored the event for a number of years, was merged into a new bank called Westpac and the event was called the Westpac Classic in its final year. Prize money was A$20,000 in 1975, A$35,000 in 1976, A$50,000 in 1977, A$60,000 in 1978, A$65,000 in 1979, A$75,000 in 1980, A$80,000 in 1981 and A$100,000 in 1982. It was also the site of Greg Norman's first professional victory, which he still regards as his most important win.
