The association was established in 1893 and organised various leagues and cups in the area, including the South Wales Senior Cup. Also, the Association ran two senior leagues in their early days, the South Wales League (which had already been in existence since 1890) and the Rhymney Valley League (formed in 1903).
After the 1967–1968 season the Football Association of Wales decided to restructure the existing football associations and proposed to set up new Area Football Associations. As a result of this restructuring, the Association was split into three separate associations by the beginning of the 1968—1969 season: The South Wales Football Association, the Monmouthshire County Football Association and the West Wales Football Association.

Mid Rhondda Football Club was an association football team, based in Tonypandy, Wales that was formed in 1912. Mid Rhondda were one of the earlier South Wales teams to form, as competition from rugby union within the Rhondda Valleys was very strong. The team played in both the Southern and Welsh Leagues, and should have been promoted to the first division of the Southern League after topping the second Division during the 1919–20 season. This though was denied them by a restructuring of the league, which in turn saw the club flounder and collapse by 1928.

The 2014 Northern NSW Football season was the first season under the new competition format in northern New South Wales. The competition consisted of six divisions across the district. The overall premier for the new structure qualified for the National Premier Leagues finals series, competing with the other state federation champions in a final knockout tournament to decide the National Premier Leagues Champion for 2014.
The Ardal Leagues are a football league in Wales. The word "ardal" translates as "district" in English. They have clubs with amateur/semi-professional status and sit at the third level of the Welsh football league system. The first year of their operation would have been 2020–21 but the 2020–21 Ardal North East season, 2020–21 Ardal North West season, 2020–21 Ardal South East season and 2020–21 Ardal South West season were all cancelled. The inaugural season was moved to 2021–22. The creation of the leagues mark the first time the Football Association of Wales owns and is administering tier 3 of the Welsh league system. These changes follow from a review of the Welsh football pyramid. To be eligible clubs need to meet the criteria for FAW tier 3 certification.
