Southerly Magazine is an independent, non-profit American media organization and magazine focusing on justice, equality, and culture in the American South. The magazine was founded by Lyndsey Gilpin, who hoped that the magazine would fill in the gaps in a region vastly underserved in environmental reporting and storytelling. [1] [2] They are sponsored by the Institute for Journalism and Natural Resources (IJNR).

In 2018, Southerly spoke with activist Pamela Rush about poverty in rural Alabama. [3]

Tornado outbreak of March 3–4, 1966

A destructive series of four tornadoes hit the Southeastern United States during March 3-4, 1966. The worst event was a violent and long-lived F5 tornado, dubbed the Candlestick Park tornado after the name of a Jackson, Mississippi shopping mall which was leveled by the storm, that wrought catastrophic damage in Mississippi and Alabama along a 202.5 mi (325.9 km) track. The outbreak killed 58, injured 521, and caused $75.552 million in damage.

Fiery Creek is a watercourse in western Victoria. It flows generally southerly from its source on the eastern side of Mount Cole in the Mount Cole State Forest to its mouth on the eastern side of Lake Bolac.

A destructive and deadly tornado outbreak tore through Eastern Alabama and Western Georgia during the afternoon of December 5, 1954. A total of 14 tornadoes were confirmed, 10 of which were significant (F2+), including one that hit Metro Atlanta. Two people were killed, 125 others were injured, and damages total $2.71 million.

Between April 23–30, 1961, a tornado outbreak sequence struck the Midwest, Ohio, and Mississippi Valleys, and the Eastern United States. Large hailstorms accompanied the tornadoes as well and numerous other weather events also occurred. Three people were killed, 38 others were injured and losses totaled $26.810 million. Two additional fatalities also occurred due to flooding and lightning.

Pamela Sue Rush was an American poverty, civil rights, and environmental justice activist who lived in rural Tyler, Alabama and who fought against poverty and inequality.
