The Maine Rebels are a football team in the Independent Women's Football League based in Portland, Maine. Home games are played at Memorial Stadium on the campus of Deering High School. They were formerly known as the Southern Maine Rebels until 2011.

Harold Delbert "Red" Drew was an American football, basketball, and track and field coach for over 40 years. He was the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team from 1947 to 1954, compiling a 54–28–7 record and leading the team to appearances in the Sugar, Orange and Cotton Bowls. He also served as an assistant football coach at Alabama from 1931 to 1941, including the undefeated 1934 team that won the national championship and played in the 1935 Rose Bowl. Drew also served as Alabama's track and field coach for 23 seasons continuing into the mid-1960s. He was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1971.

Glenn A. Cummings was a Democratic member of the Maine House of Representatives, representing the state's 115th district. He served from 2000 to 2008, including one term as the Speaker of the House, and was termed out of office in 2008. In 2000, when he first ran for the District 115 seat, Cummings became the first candidate in Maine history to qualify for public financing under Maine's new "Clean Elections" law. In 2009, Cummings was appointed deputy assistant secretary for the Office of Vocational & Adult Education. Cummings worked for the Goodwill Hinckley School in Fairfield, Maine as president and executive director.

The Binghamton Tiger Cats played their sixth season overall and fourth as a member of the Women's Spring Football League (WSFL) in 2014. The Tiger Cats Women's Tackle Football team based in Binghamton, New York began play for its inaugural 2009 season as a member of the Women's Football Alliance and for the 2010 season as a member of the Independent Women's Football League. The Tiger Cats competed as an independent team in 2011. The Tiger Cats completed the 2013 season as the WSFL Northeast Division Champions in the 8 man division and were also a WSFL National Championship Runner-Up.

The Bowdoin Polar Bears are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Bowdoin College, located in Brunswick, Maine. Bowdoin College currently fields teams in fourteen men's sports and sixteen women's sports. The Forecaster is a regional newspaper in southern Maine that is published weekly and distributed for free. Formerly owned by MaineToday Media, the paper and its different versions throughout the state were sold to the Maine Trust for Local News in August 2023. In 2012, they announced a partnership with the Bangor Daily News in which they would collaborate on news-gathering and publish stories across the websites of both newspapers.

The 2002 Georgia Southern Eagles football team represented the Georgia Southern University as a member of the Southern Conference (SoCon) during the 2002 NCAA Division I-AA football season. Led by first-year head coach Mike Sewak, the Eagles compiled an overall record of 11–3 with a mark of 7–1 in conference play, winning the SoCon title for the sixth consecutive season. Georgia Southern advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship playoffs, where they defeated Bethune–Cookman in the first round and Maine in the quarterfinals before falling to Western Kentucky in the semifinals. The Rebels were led by first-year head coach Ken Cooper and played their home games at Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi and Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson.
