The Southern Ontario Library Service (SOLS) was a "non-scheduled agency" [1] of the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture in the Canadian province of Ontario. Established in 1989, SOLS delivers programs and services to Ontario public libraries in the southern half of the province, in a geographic area bounded by Windsor in the south, to Ottawa and the Quebec border in the east, and as far north as Muskoka. Almost 200 library systems are included in this group, ranging from libraries in small communities to libraries in cities with populations in the hundreds of thousands. The Ontario Library Service North (OLS-North) performs equivalent service for the northern portion of the province. [2]

SOLS mission statement is as follows: "The people of Ontario, as represented by the Minister with jurisdiction for public libraries, will have equitable access to library services at a sustainable cost." [3]

SOLS is responsible for a number of services.

As a result of budget cuts to the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture in the 2019 Ontario budget, the budget for SOLS was reduced by 50% from $3 million to $1.5 million. [6] A spokesperson for Michael Tibollo, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, stated that SOLS and OLS-North are "arms-length agencies that have no involvement in the day-to-day operations of Ontario’s public libraries". [7]

The interlibrary loan network was operated using a van delivery system and postal service. [7] [6] The van delivery program was terminated after the budget cuts, eliminating 24 delivery driver jobs, [7] and the full program was discontinued on 26 April 2019. [8] Tibollo stated in a letter that the van-based program, which cost about $1.3 million per year, was "very inefficient" and could be replaced "by using mail, at less than 25 per cent of the existing cost". [9]

The program had also provided delivery service between branches of some library systems, for example the four branches of King Township Public Library. [7] It also resulted in the cancellation of interlibrary loan from other provinces; library systems may honour such requests, but must fund the program instead of using SOLS. [6]

In 2019, the executive director of the Ontario Library Association stated that SOLS and OLS-North "provide highly valued services". [5]

The Southern Ontario Library Service (SOLS) was merged with the Ontario Library Service - North (OLSN) to create the Ontario Library Service in 2021.

The California Digital Library (CDL) was founded by the University of California in 1997. Under the leadership of then UC President Richard C. Atkinson, the CDL's original mission was to forge a better system for scholarly information management and improved support for teaching and research. Kitchener Public Library

The Kitchener Public Library is the public library system for the city of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. It consists of five libraries; a large Central Library in the downtown core, with four Community Libraries spread out to provide services for the neighbourhoods of Kitchener.

Oakville Public Library

Oakville Public Library is the public library system for the Town of Oakville, Ontario, Canada.

Windsor Public Library is a public library system in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. It has ten branches and serves the city of Windsor through Children's, Young Adult, and Adult programs, services and collections. The central branch is located at the Paul Martin Sr. Building on Ouellette Avenue in downtown Windsor.

The Western Massachusetts Regional Library System (WMRLS), was a collaborative that was supported by the state of Massachusetts, that provided leadership and services to foster cooperation, communication, and sharing among member libraries of all types. WMRLS assisted member libraries in promoting access to services. It ceased operations on June 30, 2010 as part of a statewide merger of regional library services into a single entity. WMRLS existed in a state of dormancy from 2010-2017. The WMRLS corporation was dissolved in 2017.

The Shortgrass Library System consists of fourteen member public libraries in Southeast Alberta, Canada. The system headquarters is located in Medicine Hat. It has the distinction of being the first regional library system in the province of Alberta to have all eligible municipalities as members of a library system. Shortgrass was created by the Alberta government in 1988 as the fifth library system in the province. Services provided by Shortgrass for member libraries include cataloguing, deliveries, maintenance of the automated library system, IT support, and licensing of digital content.

Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) is a public library system consisting of nine libraries in the city of Vaughan in Ontario, Canada. It has a collection of more than 534,000 items and serves over 1.7 million visitors a year. VPL has ten branch locations, including three resource libraries. The Bathurst Clark Resource Library opened in 1994. Pierre Berton Resource Library opened in 2004. The newest resource library, Civic Centre Resource Library, opened in May 2016, and houses VPL’s administration offices. The latest branch, Vellore Village Library, opened to the public on August 11, 2018 and had its official opening ceremony on September 22, 2018. VPL serves the growing multicultural community of Vaughan by offering collections in Chinese, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Malayalam, Portuguese, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Tamil, Urdu, and Vietnamese, in addition to French and English.

Knowledge Ontario

Knowledge Ontario was a non-profit organization supporting a number of related province-wide initiatives in Ontario, Canada, providing library and information resources, learning experiences and related services to people across all ages, locations, education levels and cultural institutions. Knowledge Ontario comprised five projects: Ask Ontario, Connect Ontario, Learn Ontario, Our Ontario and Resource Ontario, as well as the eResources Portal, which was launched in 2010. Knowledge Ontario has ceased operations, effective December 31, 2012.

The Massachusetts Library System was established in 2010. The system provides the following core services: consulting, training & professional development, cooperative purchasing, research & development, summer library program, and the following services as part of resource sharing: delivery, mediated interlibrary loan, journal article document delivery, MassCat, and electronic content, including statewide databases and eBooks in collaboration with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners." It operates from offices in Marlborough and Northampton, Massachusetts.
