The Southern Utah Thunderbirds men's basketball team is the men's basketball team that represents Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah. [2] The school's team currently competes in the Western Athletic Conference. [3] The Thunderbirds are currently coached by Rob Jeter. The student section is known as the Thunderstorm.
The Thunderbirds have appeared in the NCAA tournament once, as tournament champions of the Mid-Continent Conference in 2001. Seeded fourteenth in the East regional, Southern Utah was eliminated in the first round, falling by three points to the third seed, seventh-ranked Boston College . [4]

The UMBC Retrievers are the athletic teams that represent the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, located in Catonsville, Maryland, in intercollegiate athletics as a member of the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), primarily competing in the America East Conference since the 2003–04 academic year. The Retrievers previously competed in the Northeast Conference (NEC) from 1998–99 to 2002–03; and in the Big South Conference from 1992–93 to 1997–98; while they also competed in the Mason–Dixon Conference at the NCAA Division II ranks: the first variation of it from 1972–73 to 1977–78; and the second variation from 1983–84 to 1987–88.
The Utah Utes men's basketball team, also known as the Runnin' Utes, represents the University of Utah as an NCAA Division I program that plays in the Big-12. They play their home games at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The school has made the NCAA tournament 29 times, which ranks 20th in NCAA history and tied for third most appearances behind UCLA and the University of Arizona in the Western United States. They last made the tournament in 2016. Utah won the NCAA Championship in 1944, defeating Dartmouth College 42–40 for the school's only NCAA basketball championship. However, the school also claims the 1916 AAU National Championship, which was awarded after winning the AAU national tournament. They have also won the NIT once, defeating Kentucky in 1947. In 1998, the Utes played in the NCAA championship game, losing to Kentucky.
The Western Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament is the conference championship tournament in men's basketball for the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Even though the WAC was founded in 1962, the annual tournament has only been held since 1984.

They defeated Northern Colorado in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky tournament before losing in the semifinals to Montana State.

The 41st edition of the tournament began on March 15, 2023, and concluded on April 2 with the championship game at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
The 2022–23 Southern Utah Thunderbirds men's basketball team represented Southern Utah University in the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Thunderbirds, led by seventh-year head coach Todd Simon, played their home games at the America First Event Center in Cedar City, Utah, as first-year members of the Western Athletic Conference. They finished the season 24–13, 12–6 in WAC play to finish in third place. They defeated Utah Tech and Utah Valley in the WAC tournament before losing to Grand Canyon in the championship game. They received an invitation to the College Basketball Invitational tournament where they defeated North Alabama and Rice to advance to the semifinals. There they lost to Eastern Kentucky in double overtime.

The Thunderbirds, led by 5th-year head coach Bill Evans, played their home games at the America First Event Center in Cedar City, Utah as members of the Mid-Continent Conference. They finished the season 25–6, 13–3 in Mid-Con play to finish in second place. They defeated Western Illinois, Oral Roberts, and Valparaiso to win the Mid-Con tournament and receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament – the first, and only, appearance in program history. Playing as No. 14 seed in the East region, the Thunderbirds were beaten by No. 3 seed Boston College in the opening round.
