The 2023 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) was a single-elimination, fully-bracketed men's college basketball postseason tournament featuring 16 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I teams not selected to participate in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament or the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The 15th edition of the tournament began on March 18 and concluded on March 22. [1] All games were played at Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida. Semifinal and championship games aired on ESPN2. The tournament was won by Charlotte.
Teams in the CBI were seeded 1–16.

The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) is an annual men's college basketball tournament operated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The tournament is played at regional sites with its Final Four played at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in New York City up until 2022. Starting in 2023, the NIT Final Four began following the format of the NCAA Tournament by having its Final Four at different venues each season. First held in 1938, the NIT was once considered the most prestigious post-season showcase for college basketball before its status was superseded in the mid-1950s by the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament.
Bobby Lutz is an American basketball coach. He is currently an Associate AD for the University of Mississippi Rebels men's basketball team. From 2016 to 2017, he was an assistant coach of the Windy City Bulls of the NBA Development League. He previously was an associate head coach at North Carolina State University Wolfpack men's basketball team after being an assistant coach there. Lutz was also head coach of the Charlotte 49ers basketball team from 1998 to 2010.
The 1991 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 14, 1991, and ended with the championship game on April 1 in Indianapolis, Indiana. A total of 63 games were played.
The Michigan State Spartans men's basketball team is the intercollegiate men's basketball program representing Michigan State University. The school competes in the Big Ten Conference of NCAA Division I college basketball. The Spartans have won two NCAA championships and 16 Big Ten Championships. Their home games are played at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing, Michigan. Tom Izzo has been the head coach since 1995.
The Charlotte 49ers are the intercollegiate athletics teams that represent the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina. The 49ers compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level as a member of the American Athletic Conference.
The College Basketball Invitational (CBI) is a men's college basketball tournament created in 2007 by The Gazelle Group. The inaugural tournament occurred after the conclusion of the 2007–08 men's college basketball regular season. The CBI selects 16 teams that are not selected for the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament or the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), and who are willing to pay a $27,500 entry fee to participate. In the CBI, prior to 2020 teams competed on home courts. After the post-COVID pandemic revival, the tournament has been staged at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida. The CBI is a single-elimination tournament. Prior to 2020, the tournament was single elimination until the final two teams were determined, after which the championship was determined by a championship series with a best-two-out-of-three format. Since the tournament's 2021 revival and adoption of the single-site format, the championship is also determined by a single game. In 2023, the CBI introduced NIL funding of $40,000 to be distributed in the following manner: $25,000 to the champion, $10,000 to the runner-up, and $2,500 to each semifinalist.
The Charlotte 49ers men's basketball team represents the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in NCAA Division I basketball. Charlotte is a member of the American Athletic Conference, which they joined in 2023 after 10 seasons in Conference USA. Charlotte, which had been a charter C-USA member from 1995, returned to that conference in 2013 after leaving in 2005 to join the Atlantic 10 Conference. The 49ers have also played in the Sun Belt Conference and were a member of the Metro Conference, which merged with the Great Midwest Conference to form Conference USA.
The San Jose State Spartans men's basketball team represents San José State University in NCAA Division I college basketball as a member of the Mountain West Conference.
The USC Upstate Spartans men's basketball team represents the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina, United States. The school's team formerly competed in the ASUN Conference, but moved to the Big South Conference in 2018–19. Play their home games at the G. B. Hodge Center. During their time as a member of the NAIA, they were national champions in 1982. Since their move to Division I in 2007, they have yet to qualify for the NCAA tournament.
The 2019 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament was a single-elimination tournament of 64 teams to determine the national champion for the 2018–19 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The 38th annual edition of the tournament began on March 22, and concluded with the championship game on April 7 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, with the University of South Florida serving as host. The tournament field was announced on March 18.
Ron Sanchez is a college basketball coach who is the interim head coach for the Cavaliers men's basketball team at the University of Virginia. He was appointed interim head coach in October 2024 following Tony Bennett's surprise retirement.
The 2017–18 Conference USA men's basketball season began with practices in October 2017, followed by the start of the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season in November. Conference play began in late December and concluded in early March.

The 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season began on November 7, 2022. The regular season ended on March 12, 2023, with the 2023 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament beginning with the First Four on March 14 and ending with the championship game at NRG Stadium in Houston on April 3.
The 2022–23 Charlotte 49ers men's basketball team represented the University of North Carolina at Charlotte during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by fifth-year head coach Ron Sanchez, and played their home games at Dale F. Halton Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina as members of Conference USA. They finished the season 18–13, 9–11 in C-USA play to finish in fifth place, and lost to Middle Tennessee in the first round of the C-USA tournament. Despite this, the 49ers received an invitation to the College Basketball Invitational, marking their first participation in the CBI and their first invite to a postseason tournament since 2013. In the CBI, Charlotte defeated Western Carolina, Milwaukee, and Radford to reach the championship game, where they defeated Eastern Kentucky to win their first-ever postseason tournament.
The 2022–23 Rice Owls men's basketball team represented Rice University during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by sixth-year head coach Scott Pera, and played their home games at Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston, Texas as members of Conference USA (C-USA). The Owls finished the season 19–16, 8–12 in C-USA play, to finish in a three-way tie for sixth place. As the No. 6 seed in the C-USA tournament, they defeated UTSA before losing to UAB. They received an invitation to the College Basketball Invitational where they defeated Duquesne before losing to Southern Utah in quarterfinals.

The team, led by first-year head coach Aaron Fearne, played their home games at Dale F. Halton Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina, in their first season as members in the American Athletic Conference.
The 2023–24 Indiana State Sycamores men's basketball team represented Indiana State University during the 2023–24 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Sycamores, led by third-year head coach Josh Schertz, played their home games at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute, Indiana as members of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). The team finished the season 32–7, 17–3 in MVC play to win the regular-season championship. They defeated Missouri State and Northern Iowa before losing to Drake in the MVC tournament championship game. They received a bid to the National Invitation Tournament as a No. 1 seed. They defeated SMU, Minnesota, Cincinnati and Utah to advance to the NIT championship game. There they lost to Seton Hall.
The 2023–24 Eastern Kentucky Colonels men's basketball team represented Eastern Kentucky University in the 2023–24 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Colonels, led by sixth-year head coach A. W. Hamilton, played their home games at Baptist Health Arena in Richmond, Kentucky as members of the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN).
The 2023–24 Radford Highlanders men's basketball team represented Radford University during the 2023–24 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Highlanders, led by third-year head coach Darris Nichols, played their home games at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Virginia, as members of the Big South Conference.
