SPARK is an international architecture and urban design studio registered in London, Singapore and Shanghai. The studio has designed a variety of projects from complex multiphased mixed-use buildings, city-scale master plans, residential and hotel developments, building regeneration and transformations to small scale urban infill projects.
Founded in 2008, SPARK’s projects include the rejuvenated Clarke Quay in Singapore, the International Cruise Terminal Shanghai, Starhill Gallery Kuala Lumpur, Arte S Penang, Rihan Heights Abu Dhabi, GRiD Singapore, Shekou Gateway Shenzhen and the Raffles City projects in Ningbo and Beijing.
SPARK owes its origins to the studio of British architect William Alsop, where Stephen Pimbley was a partner and worked for 16 years. He led projects such as Cardiff Bay Barrage, the Hôtel du département des Bouches-du-Rhône, Rotterdam Centraal, Calypso and The Public. He designed the transformation of Clarke Quay, leading to the founding of SPARK's first Asia studio in Singapore.
SPARK is known for its research and leadership projects. Each project deals with issues pertinent to problems the community faces in the places where SPARK works.
A shophouse is a building type serving both as a residence and a commercial business. It is defined in dictionary as a building type found in Southeast Asia that is "a shop opening on to the pavement and also used as the owner's residence", and became a commonly used term since the 1950s. Variations of the shophouse may also be found in other parts of the world; in Southern China, Hong Kong, and Macau, it is found in a building type known as Tong lau, and in towns and cities in Sri Lanka. They stand in a terraced house configuration, often fronted with arcades or colonnades, which present a unique townscape in Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, and South China.
Malaysia–Singapore Airlines was the flag carrier of Malaysia and Singapore. It came into being in 1966 as a result of a joint ownership of the airline by the governments of the two countries. He is Chairman of Wessex Water Services Limited, recognised as the best water and sewerage company in England and Wales (2010-2011) by the water industry regulator, Ofwat. Ken Yeang is an architect, ecologist, planner and author from Malaysia, best known for his ecological architecture and ecomasterplans that have a distinctive green aesthetic. He pioneered an ecology-based architecture, working on the theory and practice of sustainable design. The Guardian newspaper (2008) named him "one of the 50 people who could save the planet".[ 1] Yeang's headquarters is in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) as Hamzah & Yeang, with offices in London (UK) as Llewelyn Davies Ken Yeang Ltd. and Beijing (China) as North Hamzah Yeang Architectural and Engineering Company.
Parkway Pantai, Ltd. is a medical company based in Singapore and is Southeast Asia's largest private healthcare provider, and one of the largest in Asia. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kuala Lumpur-based IHH Healthcare, whose largest shareholder is Malaysian state investment agency Khazanah Nasional. Stefen Chow a Malaysian photographer and artist based in Beijing, China. His work is widely published and exhibited internationally. In 2013, Chow's portrait of iconic Chinese artist and activist Ai Wei Wei was awarded at the World Press Photo. Chow frequently collaborates with economist Hui-Yi Lin using extensive data and research to produce long term visual projects. One of their prominent projects is “The Poverty Line", a visual project that contextualizes global poverty. The Penang High Court, founded in 1808, is the birthplace of Malaysia's judiciary system. It is housed inside a Palladian-style building at Light Street, George Town, Penang. To this day, the High Court sits at the top of Penang's hierarchy of courts.
Arte S is a residential complex located in Gelugor, a suburb south of George Town, Penang, Malaysia. The complex consists of two residential towers, Tower A and Tower B. Tower A, with 35 stories, has a height of 121.4 m (398 ft). On the other hand, with 51 stories and a height of 186 m (610 ft), Tower B of the complex is the tallest skyscraper of Gelugor, as well as one of the tallest skyscrapers in Penang. It is the 15th tallest building in Malaysia outside of Kuala Lumpur, after Royal Strand Tower 2.
