Background

Spartanburg County Foundation was established in 1943 [2] it is the oldest [3] and second largest community foundation in South Carolina. [4] Since inception the endowment funds it manages and the fundraising efforts it has guided have resulted in the distribution of imore than $120 million to nonprofit organizations. [5] Since 1998, Spartanburg County Foundation has tripled its assets. [6]

Community leadership

Mary Thomas, the COO of the Spartanburg County Foundation, has been honored nationally for her work. [7] In particular, her leadership of the Spartanburg Community Indicators Project (an effort to address issues of obesity, [8] crime, and teen pregnancy prevention) has guided Spartanburg to pay attention to, and address, these local needs. [9] Her efforts at encouraging grassroots leadership have earned her praise from The Council on Foundations. [10]

The University of South Carolina Upstate is a public university in Valley Falls, South Carolina, near Spartanburg and with a Spartanburg postal address. Founded in 1967 and formerly known as University of South Carolina Spartanburg, the institution changed its name in the summer of 2004. It offers bachelor's and master's degrees for students in the Upstate and surrounding areas. It is part of the University of South Carolina System and home to approximately 6,000 students and 340 full-time faculty. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The Upstate is the region in the westernmost part of South Carolina, United States, also known as the Upcountry, which is the historical term. Connie LeGrand is an American television journalist who has served in broadcasting in South Carolina and was host of Speed News from 2004 to 2006.

The Miss South Carolina competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of South Carolina in the Miss America pageant. The pageant was first held in Myrtle Beach and moved to Greenville starting in 1958 and remained in that city until the 1990s. Spartanburg hosted the pageant in a few different venues until new leadership took over the organization and moved the pageant to Columbia, SC in 2011. The pageant was televised since the 1960s until the 1998 pageant. Televising was resumed with the 2000 pageant through 2006. The pageant returned to television in 2014.

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System(SRHS) is one of South Carolina's largest healthcare systems. John Mark Hammond is an American Republican politician from South Carolina. He has served as South Carolina Secretary of State since January 15, 2003.

Karen Floyd

Karen Floyd is an American attorney and politician from the state of South Carolina. She is a former prosecutor and low level magistrate judge and later served as the only female Chairperson of County Council for the state's fourth largest county. After marrying her husband Gordon, who is also the financier of her political activities, she was elected Chairperson of the South Carolina Republican Party and served from 2009 to 2011. As the first woman Chairperson of the state party, under her tenure, the party experienced historic wins by adding a Republican congressional seat and winning all constitutional offices, the first time in the state's history. This was in large part due to the "tea party" movement. Nikki Haley and Tim Scott were both elected as governor and congressman, respectively, while Floyd served as state party chairwoman.

Victor M. Richel American businessman (born 1938)

Victor M. Richel, is an American banking executive and philanthropist born on May 7, 1938, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He is the current chairman of the board of trustees at both Trinitas Health and Trinitas Regional Medical Center, as well as chairman of the board of trustees at Union County College, New Jersey. In 2000, he founded the Richel Family Foundation with his wife Andrea.

Daja Breyon Davidson is an American beauty pageant titleholder from Spartanburg, South Carolina, who was crowned Miss South Carolina 2015. She competed for the Miss America 2016 title in September 2015 and was a Top 7 finalist. She is the third African American to be crowned Miss South Carolina.
