Special Jury Prize (Karlovy Vary IFF)

The Special Jury Prize is one of the main awards of the Feature Film Competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. It is the second highest award of the festival started since 1952; after the Crystal Globe. [1]

The Last Step is Ali Mosaffa's second feature film, following Portrait of a Lady Far Away (2005), featuring Leila Hatami, Ali Mosaffa, and Alireza Aghakhani. The screenplay was partly inspired by Leo Tolstoy's 1886 novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich and James Joyce's short story "The Dead". The film is considered one of the few independently produced features within Iranian cinema and gathered worldwide success after its world premiere at the 47th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in July, 2012.

The 37th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival took place from 4 to 13 July 2002. The Crystal Globe was won by Year of the Devil, a Czech mockumentary film directed by Petr Zelenka. The second prize, the Special Jury Prize was won by Nowhere in Africa, a German historical film directed by Caroline Link. French American film actor and director Jean-Marc Barr was the president of the jury.

Polish film and theatre director, producer and screenwriter Krzysztof Zanussi was the president of the jury.
