This is a list of special forces units in Iranian Armed Forces and police.

Contents

The name can refer to members of regular units who have successfully completed Commando or Ranger training courses and marines trained as Frogman, or the hand-selected and highly trained members serving in special forces.

Terminology

Niruye vizheh (نیروی ویژه), plural niruhaye vizheh (نیروهای ویژه) is the Persian term for "special force". This term is used in the official name for the 65th Airborne Special Forces Brigade.

Takavar (تکاور), plural Takavaran (تکاوران), literally meaning "attack-trooper", is the equivalent of "commando". The word "Commando" (کماندو) is also used in Persian. The term "Ranger" (رنجر) is also used in some Army units.

Tofangdārān-e daryyi (تفنگداران دریائی) or takavaran-e daryayi (تکاوران دریایی) means "marines".

The word havabord (هوابرد) is used to refer to an airborne unit.

Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps

In the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, one of its five branches, the elite Quds Force specialises in extraterritorial operations. [1] In the Ground Forces, the Saberin Battalions (containing the Saberin Takavor Brigade, 110th Salman Farsi Special Operations Brigade, and the 33rd Al-Mahdi Airborne Brigade) are the most famous special units. The Navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has its own Special Units of marines. [5]

Islamic Republic of Iran Navy marines (Persian : تکاوران دریایی) whose members are trained at Manjil Takavar Training Centre:

During the reign of the last Shah (king) of Iran, much of the naval training was created by members of the Soviet Union's Spetsnaz and the British Special Boat Service. [6] Training is at least a 12-month process. After the recruit demonstrated the minimum physical requirements, he is sent to a collection of schools. [7]

Police

In the Law Enforcement Force of Islamic Republic of Iran, special forces are known as Yegan Vijeh (Persian : يگان ويژه). The Anti-Terror Special Force (NOPO) is the most elite unit within the force. [8]

The First Battle of Khorramshahr was a major battle in the Iran–Iraq War, beginning shortly after the Iraqi invasion of Iran in September 1980. Amidst the gruelling urban warfare in and around the city, Khorramshahr came to be referred to by the Iranians as Khuninshahr, as both sides had suffered heavy casualties in combat. It was the single largest urban battle of the Iran–Iraq war.

The Intelligence Protection Organization of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is an Iranian intelligence agency within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and part of Council for Intelligence Coordination.

The Saberin Takavar Brigade also known as Saberin Unit is an elite Takavar unit in the Ground Forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. It is considered one of the best Takavar units in the Iranian Armed Forces, with decades of military and combat experience both at home and especially in overseas operations in neighboring countries. It is one of the most exclusive units in the IRGC, having at least 6,000 members, all of them volunteers and handpicked from the best and most capable units in the IRGC Ground, Air and Sea forces.

The Special Unit of NEDSA, also known as Sepah Navy Special Force(S.N.S.F.), is a Takavar unit in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy stationed in the Greater Farur Island of the Persian Gulf.

1st Marine Imam Hossein Brigade is a marines brigade of Islamic Republic of Iran Navy based in Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan. The unit is one of top Takavar units among Iranian Armed Forces. The brigade operates in Persian Gulf and is able to operate 3,000 kilometers away from its HQ.

3rd Marine Hamza Sayyid-ush-Shuhda Brigade is a marines brigade of Islamic Republic of Iran Navy based in Konarak, Sistan and Baluchestan Province. The unit operates in Gulf of Oman.

4th Marine Imam Reza Brigade is a marines brigade of Islamic Republic of Iran Navy based in Anzali, Gilan Province.

25th Airborne Special Forces Brigade, or the NOHED Brigade, is an airborne, special forces unit of the Iranian Army established in 1959.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Conscription in Iran</span> Military conscription in the Islamic Republic of Iran

All young men who reach the age of 18 must spend about two years of compulsory military service in the Iranian army or the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Often, the General staff of the armed forces of Iran chooses where people will serve, and a person cannot choose where to serve. The length of conscription is between 18 months to 2 years.

Mohammad Ali Safa was an Iranian commando in the Bushehr Marine Rangers Battalion who was involved in the Battle of Khorramshahr and Siege of Abadan. He was killed on October 26, 1980, by a mortar shell shrapnel in Abadan, Khuzestan Province, Iran.

Bushehr Marine Rangers Battalion is one of the Iranian Navy's Commando units. The battalion had an important operational role in the early months of the Iran-Iraq War and a prominent role in the Liberation of Khorramshahr.

Parastu-14, is an Iranian trainer aircraft developed by the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force and produced by HESA. The Parastu-14 entered service with the IRIAF after passing preliminary tests.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">110th Salman Farsi Special Operations Brigade</span> Military unit

The 110th Salman Farsi Special Operations Brigade is an SOF Takavar unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Ground Forces based in the city of Zahedan, in the province of Sistan and Baluchistan. The brigade is currently commanded by Brigadier General Hossein Almasi and part of the "Qods sector headquarters" in southeastern Iran.
