Spectrum was a Toledo, Ohio-based newspaper (and later, magazine) serving the University of Toledo community.
Spectrum was founded in 1993 by two University of Toledo students, Michael Miller and Will Nicholes. Both had previously served as editors at the student newspaper, The Collegian . [1] [2]
Spectrum contributors included future Toledo Free Press cartoonist Jeff Payden (creator of GoComics comic Biff & Riley) [3] and Edward Shimborske III. Shimborske served as Spectrum's music editor from April 1993 until January 1994, when he left to start his own publication, The Glass Eye . [4]
The first issue of Spectrum was published March 31, 1993, with the tagline "Weekly guide to arts and leisure." [5] The first issue featured a preview of the UT production of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins , interviews with student leaders, and restaurant and music reviews. [5] In October of that year, the paper was first to publish a report that the UT student government was investigating The Collegian for inflating its circulation numbers by discarding large numbers of newly-printed Collegians immediately after printing them. [6] The Collegian responded the next day with an editorial denouncing the investigation as a "smear campaign" and criticizing Spectrum for publishing the report. [7]
In November 1993, the Toledo Blade published an editorial commenting on the reactions of the Spectrum and Collegian editorial teams to the news that Bruce Douglas, the then-chairman of the UT Board of Trustees, had given UT President Frank Horton cash gifts. [8] The Blade noted the "delightful irreverance [ sic ]" of the papers' columns, contrasting The Collegian's "impertinent" commentary with Miller's "more light-hearted view". [8]
In January 1994, Spectrum underwent a redesign from a newspaper format to a magazine format, featuring full-cover photography. [4] Miller currently serves as Toledo Free Press Editor-in-Chief. [1]

The Toledo Walleye are a professional ice hockey team based in Toledo, Ohio. The Walleye are members of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the ECHL. The Walleye were founded in 1991 as the Toledo Storm and play their home games at the Huntington Center, which opened in 2009. Since the beginning of the 2009–10 season, the team has been affiliated with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League and the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League with an agreement in place through the 2023–24 season.
George Jensen was an artist of Danish descent born in Port Clinton, Ohio. Jensen was best known for his Midwest and New England landscape and seascape oil paintings as well as for his artistic versatility producing numerous works from water colors to linoleum block. Jensen often traveled to Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Massachusetts and compiled sketches which he would later transcribe to canvas. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is where he would paint seascapes of black rocks and waves that would "wash 15 feet high" off Lake Superior.

The Massachusetts Daily Collegian is an American daily newspaper founded in 1890, and the independently funded, student-operated newspaper of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The Collegian is a non-profit funded entirely through advertising revenue and receives no funding from the university or from student fees. In 2018, the Collegian scaled back its print edition to one issue per month, with digital-only articles continuing to be released daily.

Emily S. Bouton was an American educator, journalist, author and editor. She was educated to become a teacher and took the highest position awarded to any woman as teacher in high school at Toledo, Ohio and Chicago, Illinois, but resigned them to engage on journalistic work on the Toledo Blade, position which she held for many years. She also wrote works on health and beauty for women and one on etiquette, beside pamphlets. She published books, wrote for the newspaper press and served as editor of the "Household", the "Saturday Salad" and the "Home Talk" columns of the Toledo Daily Blade. She was the author of Social Etiquette, Health and Beauty and other works more or less directly relating to women. Bouton died in 1927.
