Königsberg is the name for a former German city that is now Kaliningrad, Russia. Originally a Sambian or Old Prussian city, it later belonged to the State of the Teutonic Order, the Duchy of Prussia, the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany until 1945. After being largely destroyed in World War II by Allied bombing and Soviet forces and annexed by the Soviet Union thereafter, the city was renamed Kaliningrad. Few traces of the former Königsberg remain today.

History

Speichersdorf was neighbored by Rosenau to the north, Ponarth to the west, Aweiden to the south, and Schönfliess to the southeast. In the late 17th century the estate was controlled by the ducal official Friedrich Kupner (1648-1719). [1] On 16 June 1927 the estate and village were incorporated into the city of Königsberg. [2] In the first half of the 20th century it developed into a working class quarter. [3] Speichersdorf also contained a psychiatric hospital which was converted into a retirement home in the 1920s. [4]
