The Spice Girls Dolls are celebrity dolls based on the popular girl group the Spice Girls. They were released by Galoob Toys from 1997 to 1999. With sales of over 11 million, [1] [2] they are the best-selling celebrity dolls of all time. [3] [4]

History

In October 1997, it was announced that the Spice Girls were collaborating with Galoob Toys to create a range of Spice Girls dolls. The first dolls were originally due to be released in 1998, but as the profile of the band rose, the decision was taken to expedite their production, just in time for the Christmas season. [5]

The first set of dolls released by Galoob was called the "Girl Power" series, available in December 1997, after more than two months of negotiations with the band and their management about the products. Due to the hasty production, there was a low supply of the dolls, with only a fraction of the expected demand able to be met. Leading industry experts feared there would be a "toy rage" phenomenon, similar to Black Friday shopping. [5] The set of dolls, all sold individually, initially featured Geri Halliwell (“Ginger Spice”, who left the band in May 1998) in her iconic Union Jack dress, with red/blonde highlighted hair and Union Jack-themed platform shoes (modeled after her actual shoes by Buffalo). The dolls were retailed for around US$20-30.00 each. [6]

In total, eight different sets of dolls were released by Galoob from 1997 to 1999. Each series released came with new, different outfits and additional accessories. Individually-sold extra products included the concert "Sound Stage" playset, a miniature “SpiceBus” (the band’s tourbus, seen in their film), and different "Spiceworld Fashions" costumes. [7] The "On Stage" series, released in June 1999, was the first series not to feature Halliwell, who had left the group in May 1998. The “On Tour” series featured accessories such as microphones, headsets, disco balls and miniature sound equipment. [8] [9] Dolls featuring the group wearing outfits from their music videos were planned, but never released.[ citation needed ] There were plans to continue the Spice Girls doll line into 2000, with the "Millennium Tour Collection", set for release in October; however, the line was postponed indefinitely when the future of the Spice Girls became uncertain.

The dolls became a huge hit during the Christmas seasons of 1997 and 1998, selling over 11 million. [1] [2] In 1997, the Spice Girls dolls generated more than $200 million in retail sales [10] [11] and the success of the dolls earned toymaker Galoob $150 million in pretax cash. [12] The dolls were the fifth best-selling toy—despite limited stock—in the UK for the 1997 Christmas season according to the British Association of Toy Retailers' annual Christmas best-seller chart. [13] In 1998, they were the second best-selling toy of 1998 in the USA according to toy trade publication Playthings' annual industry survey. [14]

It debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, with first-week sales of 190,000 copies and shipped 1.4 million copies in two weeks. The album also reached number one in 13 countries, while peaking inside the top three in Australia, Canada, France, Switzerland and the United States. Spiceworld has sold over 14 million copies worldwide, making it one of the world's best-selling albums by a girl group.

<i>Forever</i> (Spice Girls album) 2000 studio album by Spice Girls

Forever is the third studio album by English girl group the Spice Girls, released on 1 November 2000 by Virgin Records. It is their only album without Geri Halliwell, who later rejoined the group for their Greatest Hits album in 2007. Despite failing to match the commercial success of the group's two previous albums, Forever peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart and was certified Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). Worldwide the album has sold over two million copies, a fraction of what Spice and Spiceworld sold. The lead and only single, the double A-side "Holler" and "Let Love Lead the Way", went on to debut at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the group's ninth number one single. The Spiceworld Tour was the debut concert tour by British girl group the Spice Girls. It was launched in support of their first two studio albums, Spice (1996) and Spiceworld (1997). The sell-out European/North American tour ran from February to August 1998, after which it returned to the UK in September 1998 for a series of stadium shows. The final concert at London's Wembley Stadium was filmed and broadcast live on pay-per-view, for later VHS release in 1998 and eventual DVD release in 2008.

Sindy is a British fashion doll created by Pedigree Dolls & Toys in 1963. A rival to Barbie, Sindy's wholesome look and range of fashions and accessories made her the best-selling toy in the United Kingdom in 1968 and 1970. After Marx Toys' unsuccessful attempt to introduce Sindy in the United States in the late 1970s, Hasbro bought the rights to Sindy and remodelled the doll to look more American. As a result, the doll's popularity declined; in addition Barbie manufacturer Mattel filed a lawsuit for copyright infringement, which was settled when Hasbro agreed to remodel Sindy's face. Spice Girls Live at Wembley Stadium is the third video album by English girl group the Spice Girls. It was released on VHS on 24 November 1998 by Virgin Records, and was filmed at Wembley Stadium in London on 20 September 1998 during the Spiceworld Tour. The concert was first broadcast live in a pay-per-view special on Sky Box Office, and although the television broadcast was completely live, studio vocals were dubbed into several songs for the video version of the performance. It received a DVD release in the United Kingdom on 6 October 2008.

The Spice Girls are an English pop girl group that first came to international prominence in 1996 with the release of their debut single "Wannabe". The following year, they became involved in a prolific marketing phenomenon, leading to an unprecedented number of Spice Girls merchandise and sponsorship deals.
