Spuhlja (pronounced  [ˈspuːxlja] ) is a settlement in the Municipality of Ptuj in northeastern Slovenia. It lies east of the town of Ptuj, just north of Lake Ptuj (a reservoir on the Drava River). The area is part of the traditional region of Styria. It is now included with the rest of the municipality in the Drava Statistical Region. [2]

Ptuj is a town in northeastern Slovenia that is the seat of the Municipality of Ptuj. Ptuj, the oldest recorded city in Slovenia, has been inhabited since the late Stone Age and developed from a Roman military fort. Ptuj was located at a strategically important crossing of the Drava River, along a prehistoric trade route between the Baltic Sea and the Adriatic. Traditionally the area was part of the Styria region and became part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. In the early 20th century the majority of the residents were ethnic Germans, but today the population is largely Slovene. Residents of Ptuj are known as Ptujčani in Slovene.

Lake Ptuj

Lake Ptuj is a reservoir on the Drava River southeast of the town of Ptuj in eastern Slovenia. It is the largest reservoir in Slovenia and was created in 1978 when a dam for the Formin hydroelectric power plant was built on the Drava. It is still used as the reservoir for the power plant, but is also popular for rowing, sailing, and fishing.
