Square Angel (foaled April 4, 1970 in Ontario) was a Canadian Champion Thoroughbred racehorse.
Bred by E. P. Taylor, Square Angel was sired by the 1964 Belmont Stakes winner, Quadrangle. Her dam, Nangela, was a daughter of Nearctic, the sire of one of the most influential sires in Thoroughbred history, Northern Dancer. [2]
Square Angel was purchased and raced by General W. Preston Gilbride CBE, DSO, CO-N, who entrusted her training to future Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame trainer, Frank Merrill, Jr. [3] A stakes winner at two, Square Angel, as a three-year-old in 1973, won Canada's most prestigious race for fillies of her age group: the Canadian Oaks. In addition to victories in the Fury Stakes and Nettie Handicap, she initially finished first in the Wonder Where Stakes but was disqualified and placed second. Square Angel's performances earned her the titleof Canadian Champion Three-Year-Old Filly.
Retired to broodmare duty, Square Angel was the dam of four stakes winners and one additional stakes-placed winner from six foals to race. [4] Among her best offspring were Kamar (b. 1976), a Canadian Champion Three-Year-Old Filly and the 1990 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year, and Love Smitten (b. 1981), whose wins included the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap and the Grade 2 Santa Maria Handicap and who was the dam of Swain. [5] Kamar's daughter, Jood produced Fantastic Light.
Dance Smartly (1988–2007) was a Champion Thoroughbred racemare who went undefeated in 1991 while winning the Canadian Triple Crown and becoming the first horse bred in Canada to win a Breeders' Cup race. She was inducted into both the Canadian and American Racing Halls of Fame.
Glencoe (1831–1857) was a British bred Thoroughbred racehorse, who won the 2,000 Guineas Stakes and the Ascot Gold Cup. He was one of the earliest Thoroughbred stallions imported into the United States and was a top broodmare sire there. Several outstanding sons of Lexington were out of Glencoe mares, including Asteroid, Kentucky and Norfolk.
Buckpasser was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who was the 1966 Horse of the Year. His other achievements include 1965 Champion Two-Year-Old, 1966 Champion Three-Year-Old, 1966 Champion Handicap Horse, and 1967 Champion Handicap Horse. He was also the leading broodmare sire in 1983, 1984, and 1989.
La Troienne (1926–1954) was one of the most famous and influential Thoroughbred broodmares in twentieth century America. She produced 10 winners including two Hall of Fame inductees while at stud, while her daughters in turn produced many notable offspring. In 2000, pedigree expert Janeen Oliver designated her as the taproot of family 1-x, a designation that was implemented by the Pedigree Online Thoroughbred Database in 2003. Recent matrilineal descendants include 2003 Horse of the Year Mineshaft, Japanese Triple Crown winner Contrail (2020), Kentucky Derby winners Smarty Jones (2004) and Super Saver (2010), Belmont Stakes winner Essential Quality (2021), and Sussex Stakes winner Alcohol Free (2021).
My Flag was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. She was one of the leading American fillies of her generation, winning the Coaching Club American Oaks and finishing third against colts in the Belmont Stakes in 1996. My Flag was euthanized April 12, 2014, at age of 21, due to foaling complications for her bay colt by Bernardini.
Carotene is a Canadian Thoroughbred Hall of Fame racehorse who holds the filly or mare record for winning the most Sovereign Awards. Bred by David Willmot's Kinghaven Farms, she was a daughter of the British sire Great Nephew, who also sired Epsom Derby winners Grundy and Shergar. Carotene's dam was Carrot Top, a mare David Willmot purchased in foal from the Whitney family at the 1982 dispersal sale of their bloodstock in the United Kingdom.

Nodouble (1965–1990) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from 1967 to 1970, he won eleven races from across the country, including the Arkansas Derby, Hawthorne Gold Cup (twice) and the Santa Anita, Brooklyn and Metropolitan Handicaps. He was twice voted American Champion Older Male Horse by the Thoroughbred Racing Association. After retirement to stud, he became the leading sire in North America of 1981 and was also a notable broodmare sire.
No Class was a Canadian Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse.
Tudor Queen was a Champion Thoroughbred racehorse in Canada and the United States. In 1969 she was voted American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly by the Thoroughbred Racing Association.
Weekend Surprise was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and dam of 1992 American Horse of the Year A.P. Indy and 1990 Preakness Stakes winner Summer Squall. She was sired by the famous Triple Crown winner Secretariat.
Luke McLuke was a bay Thoroughbred stallion born in the United States. He won the 1914 Belmont Stakes, the Carlton Stakes, Kentucky Handicap, and Grainger Memorial Handicap among his four wins from six starts.
