The Sri Lanka Dental Association (SLDA) is the national professional association for dental practitioners in Sri Lanka. [1] Established in 1932, it is one of the oldest dental associations in the country. [2] The SLDA claims to be dedicated to promoting oral health, advancing dental education and practice, and advocating for dental professionals in Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lanka Dental Association (SLDA) was founded in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on December 6, 1932, [3] by a group of dental professionals led by Dr. E. R. Amarasekara. Its initial objective was to establish a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and promoting high standards in dental care. The association supports professional development by facilitating continuing education and training for dental practitioners. Additionally, the SLDA has advocates for the enhancement of oral health policies and standards in Sri Lanka. The SLDA maintains affiliations with international dental associations and organizations to foster global collaboration and knowledge exchange in the field of dentistry, including the FDI World Dental Federation and the Commonwealth Dental Association. [1] [15]

The dentist's supporting team aids in providing oral health services. The dental team includes dental assistants, dental hygienists, dental technicians, and sometimes dental therapists.
A dental hygienist or oral hygienist is a licensed dental professional, registered with a dental association or regulatory body within their country of practice. Prior to completing clinical and written board examinations, registered dental hygienists must have either an associate's or bachelor's degree in dental hygiene from an accredited college or university. Once registered, hygienists are primary healthcare professionals who work independently of or alongside dentists and other dental professionals to provide full oral health care. They have the training and education that focus on and specialize in the prevention and treatment of many oral diseases.
