The Sri Lankan cricket team toured Pakistan in March and April 1974, playing eight first-class matches, including two against Pakistan. [1] Sri Lanka did not then have Test status. At the time it was Sri Lanka's longest tour. [2]
Sri Lanka began with a seven-wicket victory over Sind, and a drawn match against Punjab. In the first four-day match against Pakistan, at Lahore, Pakistan made 302 for 9 declared and 420 for 7; Sri Lanka made 369. [3]
Two more drawn matches followed, against the North West Frontier Province Governor's XI and Pakistan Universities, before a 124-run victory over Pakistan Western Railways, and a draw against Pakistan Under-19. In the second match against Pakistan, at Karachi, Pakistan made 216 and 224, and Sri Lanka made 265 and 158, giving Pakistan victory by 17 runs. [4]
Tony Opatha was the highest wicket-taker on either side in the two matches against Pakistan, with 12 wickets at an average of 19.83. Zaheer Abbas was the highest run-scorer, with 251 runs at 62.75.
Sri Lanka's performance in the two matches against Pakistan led the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in Pakistan, A. H. Kardar, to urge the International Cricket Conference to consider promoting Sri Lanka to Test status. [2] When Sri Lanka played their first Test in 1982, six of this touring team (Ajit de Silva, Somachandra de Silva, Kaluperuma, Mendis, Warnapura and Wettimuny) were in the side. [5]
The Sri Lanka men's national cricket team, nicknamed The Lions, represents Sri Lanka in men's international cricket. It is a full Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with Test, One-Day International (ODI) and T20 International (T20I) status. The team first played international cricket in 1926–27 and became an associate member of the ICC in 1965. They were awarded the Test status in 1981, which made Sri Lanka the eighth Test cricket-playing nation. The team is administered by Sri Lanka Cricket.
Dandeniyage Somachandra de Silva also known as D. S. de Silva is a Sri Lankan former cricketer, who played Test and One Day International cricket in the 1970s and 1980s. He is the first ODI cap for Sri Lanka, second test cap for Sri Lanka and was part of Sri Lanka's first test team. He bowled leg spin, and on the tour of Pakistan in 1982 he became the first Sri Lankan bowler to take five wickets in a Test innings. He was also the oldest player to lead Sri Lanka in test cricket during a test tour to New Zealand in 1983. He is also regarded as the longest serving spinner to have played for Sri Lanka and considered one of the finest leg spinners to have emerged from Sri Lanka.
Lalith Wasantha Silva Kaluperuma is a former Sri Lankan international cricketer, who played first-class cricket from 1970 to 1983. He played in Sri Lanka's first Test team in 1982.
Bandula Warnapura was a Sri Lankan cricketer and former captain of the Sri Lankan cricket team. He played four Test matches and twelve One Day Internationals (ODI) during his international cricketing career from 1975 to 1982. He was a right-handed opening batsman and a right-handed medium pace bowler.
Mithra de Silva Wettimuny was a Sri Lankan cricketer who played in two Test matches and one One Day International (ODI) in 1983.
The England cricket team toured Sri Lanka in February 1982. The tour included two One Day International (ODI) matches and one Test match. Sri Lanka had become a Test playing nation the year before, and this was their inaugural Test match. Many celebrations had been prepared in Sri Lanka, include the issuing of commemorative stamps and coins.
Balapuwaduge Ajantha Winslow Mendis better known as Ajantha Mendis is a Sri Lankan former international cricketer who played for Sri Lankan national cricket team in all three formats. He is also known as the "mystery spinner" due to the unusual bowling action variations. In August 2019, he retired from all forms of cricket. Mendis was a member of the Sri Lankan team that won the 2014 ICC World Twenty20.
The Pakistani cricket team toured Sri Lanka from 23 February to 27 March 1986. The tour consisted of three Test matches and four One Day Internationals (ODIs). This was Pakistan's first Test series tour in Sri Lanka. The series ended 1–1 with 1 match drawn.
Deshabandu Pinnaduwage Aravinda de Silva is a former Sri Lankan cricketer and captain, Regarded as one of the best Sri Lankan cricketer, he played in the team as an all-rounder. De Silva was a key member of the Sri Lankan team that won 1996 Cricket World Cup, where he scored a match winning century in the final, that brought Sri Lanka from underdog status to present-day form. He has held various posts in Sri Lankan Cricket after his retirement in 2003. He was inducted into ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2023.
The Sri Lankan national cricket team toured Australia and New Zealand in February and March 1983 and played a two-match Test series against the New Zealand national cricket team. New Zealand won the series 2–0. New Zealand were captained by Geoff Howarth and Sri Lanka by Somachandra de Silva. In addition, the teams played a three-match series of Limited Overs Internationals (LOI) which New Zealand won 3–0. The Australian leg of the tour consisted of two first-class matches but no Tests.
In the 1982–83 cricket season, the Sri Lankan national cricket team toured to India to play the Indian national cricket team. The tour included one Test match. That match was drawn. Three players scored centuries; Duleep Mendis scored 105 in both Sri Lankan innings, and Sunil Gavaskar and Sandeep Patil scored 155 and 144 respectively, both in India's first innings. Three players took a five-wicket haul in the game; Dilip Doshi took five wickets for 85 runs in Sri Lanka's first innings, Kapil Dev took five wickets for 110 runs and Ashantha de Mel took five wickets for 68 runs.
Athege Roshen Shivanka Silva, commonly known as Roshen Silva is a professional Sri Lankan Test cricketer who plays for the Sri Lanka national cricket team. He also plays first-class cricket for Colts Cricket Club.
The Sri Lanka cricket team toured the United Arab Emirates in September and October 2017 to play two Tests, five One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches against the Pakistan cricket team. The tour included the first Tests that Sarfaraz Ahmed of Pakistan captained following the retirement of Misbah-ul-Haq. The tour also featured a T20I match in Pakistan, the first time that Sri Lanka had visited the country since 2009.
Bodiyabaduge Oshada Piyumal Fernando, commonly as Oshada Fernando, is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer who plays all formats of the game. He plays for Chilaw Marians Cricket Club in domestic cricket, and he made his international debut for the Sri Lanka cricket team in February 2019. He has his education at Sri Sumangala College, Panadura.

The Sri Lankan cricket team toured Pakistan in September and October 2019 to play three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches against the Pakistan cricket team. The tour originally had two Test matches scheduled to take place, but these were moved to December 2019. Sri Lanka last played a match in Pakistan in October 2017, when the third T20I took place at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Pakistan won the ODI series 2–0, after the first match was washed out, and Sri Lanka won the T20I series 3–0.
The West Indies cricket team toured Sri Lanka in February and March 2020 to play three One Day International (ODI) and two Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. The full schedule for the tour was confirmed by Sri Lanka Cricket on 21 January 2020. The West Indies last toured Sri Lanka in October and November 2015.
The England cricket team toured Sri Lanka in January 2021 to play two Test matches. The Test series formed part of the inaugural 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship. Originally, the tour was scheduled to take place in March 2020, but the series was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In December 2020, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the dates for the tour, with both Test matches played in Galle.
The Pakistan cricket team toured Sri Lanka in July 2022 to play two Test matches against the Sri Lankan cricket team. The Test series formed part of the 2021–2023 ICC World Test Championship. In April 2022, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that the series would be taking place. Originally, the tour was also going to include three One Day International (ODI) matches, but these were cancelled in May 2022, as they were not part of the 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. The fixtures for the tour were confirmed in June 2022. Pakistan last toured Sri Lanka for a Test series in June and July 2015. On 17 July 2022, Sri Lanka Cricket moved the second Test from the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo to the Galle International Stadium due to the economic crisis in the country.
In October 1982, a representative team of Sri Lankan cricket players undertook a so-called "Rebel tour" to South Africa, to play a series of matches against the South African team colloquially called the 'cuckoo tour'. At the time, the International Cricket Council (ICC) had placed a moratorium on international cricket teams making tours of South Africa, due to the nation's government policy of apartheid, leaving South Africa with no international competition.
