St. Hovhannes Church was an Armenian church located in village of Chalkhangala (Kangarli District) of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. [1] It was located southeast of the village. [1] [2]

History

The church was founded in the 12th or 13th century and was renovated in 1651 and in the 19th century. [2]

Architecture

The church was a single-nave structure with vaulted hall, a semicircular apse, and an entrance on the northern facade. [2] There were Armenian inscriptions on the northern facade, and ornamentation on the bema. [2]

Destruction

The church was still extant in 2001, however, it was destroyed at some point between August 30, 2001, and July 15, 2011, as documented by Caucasus Heritage Watch. [1]

Çalxanqala is a village and municipality in the Kangarli District of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. It is located 33 km in the north-west from the district center, on the south slope of the Daralayaz ridge. Its population is busy with grain-growing, vine-growing, beekeeping and animal husbandry. There are secondary school, music school, library, club and a medical center in the village. It has a population of 2,149. It was the last Armenian-populated town in Nakhchivan.
