St. Joseph Medical Center (SJMC) is a hospital in Tacoma, Washington. Part of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, a division of Catholic Health Initiatives, it was the founding Washington operation of the former Franciscan Health System. [1]
St. Joseph Medical Center was called St. Joseph Hospital when it was established by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in 1891. [1] As a part of the non-profit and faith-based Franciscan Health System, the mission of St. Joseph Medical Center is "to nurture the healing ministry of the Church by bringing it new life, energy and viability in the 21st century. Fidelity to the Gospel urges us to emphasize human dignity and social justice as we move toward the creation of healthier communities."
In 1969, an expansion was undertaken by Bertrand Goldberg to provide an additional 260 beds.
In 2001, the Nisqually Earthquake rocked the Pacific Northwest with an epicenter a mere 15 miles from Tacoma, where SJMC is located. Despite fears of building failure, SJMC withstood [2] the 6.8 magnitude quake because it is made of reinforced concrete.
As a Level II trauma center, SJMC's services include 24-hour emergency medical care. [3] In 2013 the hospital opened an upgraded Level III NICU that operates in conjunction with Seattle Children's hospital. [4] SJMC offers inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical services; heart and vascular care; orthopedic services; rehabilitation services; cancer care; diagnostic imaging; physical, speech and occupational therapies; hospice; and a voluntary admit adult inpatient mental health program.
The annual ED volume is reported by the staffing group to be about 47000.
Virginia Mason Medical Center is an integrated hospital, training and research facility located in Seattle, Washington, USA. It was the founding location, in 1920, of the private, non-profit Virginia Mason health organization; in January 2021, the Virginia Mason organization merged with CHI Franciscan to form Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, under the parent company CommonSpirit Health. After the merger, the Virginia Mason Medical Center continues under its original name.
University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center is a 300-bed regional medical center in Towson, Maryland formerly operated by Catholic Health Initiatives. On December 1, 2012, University of Maryland Medical System acquired all the assets of St. Joseph Medical Center from Catholic Health Initiatives and renamed the hospital to University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center. An agreement was made between University of Maryland Medical System and the Archdiocese of Baltimore to continue the religious mission and Catholic traditions at University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center.

Mary Bridge Children's Hospital is a pediatric hospital located in Tacoma, Washington. It is an 82-bed facility and a state-designated level II pediatric trauma center. Mary Bridge was established in 1955 by members of Tacoma Orthopedic Association, a women's volunteer group established in 1921. Members of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association saw a need for a specialized pediatric health care center in Tacoma. Key funding came from the estate of Dr. Albert W. Bridge, a physician who practiced in Eatonville, Washington and later also opened a clinic in Tacoma. The hospital was named for his mother, Mary.

St. Joseph Medical Center (SJMC) is a general acute care hospital in Houston, Texas owned by Steward Health Care. Established in June 1887, SJMC is recognized as the first hospital in Houston. A new hospital was constructed in 1894, but was destroyed by fire soon thereafter. The hospital was rebuilt and it underwent major expansions in 1905 and 1938. The hospital was the largest in the city until the Texas Medical Center was established. The hospital has a capacity of 792 beds. A second location was open in the Houston Heights from 2012 to 2019.
The SEIU Healthcare 1199NW strike of 2014 was a 24-hour strike called by the Service Employees Union healthcare Local 1199NW. The strike was begun on Tuesday, November 18, 2014, at 7:00 A.M. There were 1,100 workers at two Pierce County hospital operated by CHI Franciscan Health in Tacoma participated in the strike event. The two hospitals are St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma and St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood. Nurse assistants, licensed practical nurses, unit secretaries, dietary workers, housekeepers, sterile processors, technical workers and other services of the two hospitals were walked off the job to participate in the strike. The strike did not include nurses and doctors. The union members were demanding CHI Franciscan Health to improve wages, improve on health care, improve on their charity care policy, and end unfair labor practices.
