Stacy M. Hardy is a writer, a teacher, a researcher, and an editor at Chimurenga, a pan-African journal.
Since 2014, Hardy has been a part-time lecturer in the MA in Creative Writing Program at Rhodes University, South Africa, and has taught creative writing in informal and non-academic contexts.
Hardy is a partner in Saseni, [1] a creative writing teaching initiative that connects higher education and the creative arts in Africa, and the founder of Ukuthula, [2] a pan-African initiative that develops new writing from and against gender-based violence. She has hosted interdisciplinary workshops and writing intensives in diverse locations, including Dakar, Kigali, Cairo, Tombwa (Angola), Nairobi, Lagos, Berlin, New York, and online, and facilitated graduate seminars and writing workshops worldwide. Hardy's writing has appeared in various publications worldwide, including The Johannesburg Review of Books, [3] New Contrasts [4] , the New Orleans Review, [5] The Evergreen Review, and many more.
Her published works include Because the Night, a collection of short fiction published by Pocko Books, London, in 2015. [6] [7] [8] In 2022, a new collection of her short fiction, Archéologie des Trous, [9] [10] was published in French translation by Rot-Bo-Krik, Paris, with the English version set to be released by Bridge Books, Chicago in late 2023.
She has won multiple awards for her work, including the 2018 Brittle Paper Award for Fiction, [11] and has been a finalist or semifinalist for many others, such as the 2022 Noemi Press Book Award and the 2018 Caine Prize. [12] In addition to her writing, Hardy is also involved in the production of multimedia works. She collaborates with Angolan composer, performer, and instrument designer Victor Gama, and their works have been performed at various venues, including the Harris Theatre in Chicago, USA, the Department of Music Stanford University in Stanford, CA, USA, and Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. [13] In July 2022, a new iteration of their collaboration received a Prince Claus Fund Award for Cultural and Artistic Responses to Environmental Change award to open a pop up art laboratory in the Namib desert in Angola. [14] [15] Hardy’s one-woman performance piece, Museum of Lungs, which she created together with Egyptian director Laila Soliman and musicians Neo Muyanga and Nancy Mounir, premiered at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg in September 2018. It went on to have an extensive European tour from 2018 to 2019, including dates at Kaserne in Basel and Spielart in Munich. [16] [17] [18] [19]
Hardy wrote the libretto for Woman at Point Zero a new opera with composer Bushra El-Turk and director Laila Soliman, which won the prestigious Fedora - Generali Prize for Opera 2020. [20] The opera premiered at Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in 2022 and received critical acclaim. Future performances include appearances at the All Arias festival in deSingel Antwerpen, [21] Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Concertgebouw Brugge, Muziekcentrum De Bijloke Gent, Royal Opera House London, Shubbak Festival London, and Snape Maltings UK in 2023. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Hardy is involved in numerous interdisciplinary networks and research projects. She is a member of Connectors, an international network that brings together academics and organisations playing important roles at the intersection of engagement between health and research. She is also one of the organisers of “Planetary Health and Postcolonial Dis-Ease,” an international research project focused on the multi-sited politics of environment and health, hosted by the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna. [23] Currently, Hardy is a research fellow at the University of Chicago, where she is working on a research-and-performance-based collaborative endeavour with anthropologist Kaushik Sunder Rajan, musician Neo Muyanga, and poet Daniel Borzutsky. Their project explores the politics and poetics of breath through a focus on colonial histories and postcolonial politics. [24] [25]
Kenneth Binyavanga Wainaina was a Kenyan author, journalist and 2002 winner of the Caine Prize for African Writing. In 2003, he was the founding editor of Kwani? literary magazine. In April 2014, Time magazine included Wainaina in its annual Time 100 as one of the "Most Influential People in the World".
The Caine Prize for African Writing is an annual literary award for the best original short story by an African writer, whether in Africa or elsewhere, published in the English language. Founded in the United Kingdom in 2000, the £10,000 prize was named in memory of businessman and philanthropist Sir Michael Harris Caine, former Chairman of Booker Group plc and of the Booker Prize management committee. Because of this connection with the Booker Prize, the Caine Prize is sometimes called the "African Booker". The prize is known as the AKO Caine Prize for African Writing. The Chair of the Board is Ellah Wakatama, appointed in 2019.
Laila Lalami is a Moroccan-American novelist, essayist, and professor. After earning her Licence de lettres degree in Morocco, she received a fellowship to study in the United Kingdom (UK), where she earned an MA in linguistics.
Helon Habila Ngalabak is a Nigerian novelist and poet, whose writing has won many prizes, including the Caine Prize in 2001. He worked as a lecturer and journalist in Nigeria before moving in 2002 to England, where he was a Chevening Scholar at the University of East Anglia, and now teaches creative writing at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia.
Sarah Ladipo Manyika FRSL is a British-Nigerian writer of novels, short stories and essays and an active member of the literary community, particularly supporting and amplifying young writers and female voices. She is author of two well received novels, In Dependence (2009) and Like A Mule Bringing Ice Cream To The Sun (2016), as well as the non-fiction collection Between Starshine and Clay: Conversations from the African Diaspora (2022), and her writing has appeared in publications including Granta, Transition, Guernica, and OZY, and previously served as founding Books Editor of OZY. Manyika's work also features in the 2019 anthology New Daughters of Africa.
Doreen Baingana is a Ugandan writer. Her short story collection, Tropical Fish, won the Grace Paley Award for Short Fiction in 2003 and the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for best first book, Africa Region in 2006. Stories in it were finalists for the Caine Prize in 2004 and 2005. She was a Caine Prize finalist for the third time in 2021 and has received many other awards listed below..
NoViolet Bulawayo is the pen name of Elizabeth Zandile Tshele, a Zimbabwean author. In 2012, the National Book Foundation named her a "5 under 35" honoree. She was named one of the Top 100 most influential Africans by New African magazine in 2014. Her debut novel, We Need New Names, was shortlisted for the 2013 Booker Prize, and her second novel, Glory, was shortlisted for the 2022 Booker Prize, making her "the first Black African woman to appear on the Booker list twice".
Esi Edugyan is a Canadian novelist. She has twice won the Giller Prize, for her novels Half-Blood Blues (2011) and Washington Black (2018).
Ellah Wakatama, OBE, Hon. FRSL, is the Editor-at-Large at Canongate Books, a senior Research Fellow at Manchester University, and Chair of the AKO Caine Prize for African Writing. She was the founding Publishing Director of the Indigo Press. A London-based editor and critic, she was on the judging panel of the 2017 International Dublin Literary Award and the 2015 Man Booker Prize. In 2016, she was a Visiting Professor & Global Intercultural Scholar at Goshen College, Indiana, and was the Guest Master for the 2016 Gabriel Garcia Marquez Foundation international journalism fellowship in Cartagena, Colombia. The former deputy editor of Granta magazine, she was the senior editor at Jonathan Cape, Random House and an assistant editor at Penguin. She is series editor of the Kwani? Manuscript Project and the editor of the anthologies Africa39 and Safe House: Explorations in Creative Nonfiction.
Lillian Aujo is a Ugandan author. In 2009, she was the winner of the Babishai Niwe (BN) Poetry Foundation's inaugural BN poetry prize. In 2015, she was longlisted for, and won the Inaugural Jalada Prize for Literature for her story "Where pumpkin leaves dwell".
Carla Namwali Serpell is an American and Zambian writer who teaches in the United States. In April 2014, she was named on Hay Festival's Africa39 list of 39 Sub-Saharan African writers aged under 40 with the potential and talent to define trends in African literature. Her short story "The Sack" won the 2015 Caine Prize for African fiction in English. In 2020, Serpell won the Belles-lettres category Grand Prix of Literary Associations 2019 for her debut novel The Old Drift.
Margaret Yvonne Busby,, Hon. FRSL, also known as Nana Akua Ackon, is a Ghanaian-born publisher, editor, writer and broadcaster, resident in the UK. She was Britain's youngest and first black female book publisher when she and Clive Allison (1944–2011) co-founded the London-based publishing house Allison and Busby in the 1960s. She edited the anthology Daughters of Africa (1992), and its 2019 follow-up New Daughters of Africa. She is a recipient of the Benson Medal from the Royal Society of Literature. In 2020 she was voted one of the "100 Great Black Britons". In 2021, she was honoured with the London Book Fair Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2023, Busby was named as president of English PEN.
Meri Nana-Ama Danquah is a Ghanaian-American writer, editor, journalist and public speaker, whose name at birth was Mildred Mary Nana-Ama Boakyewaa Brobby. She is best known for her 1998 memoir Willow Weep for Me: A Black Woman's Journey Through Depression. Her short story "When a Man Loves a Woman" was shortlisted for the 2022 AKO Caine Prize for African Writing.
The Aké Arts and Book Festival is a literary and artistic event held annually in Nigeria. It was founded in 2013 by Lola Shoneyin, a Nigerian writer and poet, in Abeokuta. It features new and established writers from across the world, and its primary focus has been to promote, develop, and celebrate the creativity of African writers, poets, and artists. The Aké Arts and Book Festival has been described as the African continent's biggest annual gathering of literary writers, editors, critics, and readers. The festival has an official website and a dedicated magazine, known as the Aké Review.
Lidudumalingani Mqombothi is a South African writer, film-maker and photographer. His short story "Memories We Lost" won the 2016 Caine Prize for African Writing.
Jowhor Ile is a Nigerian writer known for his first novel, And After Many Days. In 2016, the novel was awarded the Etisalat Prize for Literature.
Efemia Chela is a Zambian-Ghanaian writer, literary critic, and editor. "Chicken", her first published story, was shortlisted for the 2014 Caine Prize for African Writing. Chela has had short stories and poems published in New Internationalist, Wasafiri, Token and Pen Passages: Africa. In 2016, she co-edited the Short Story Day Africa collection, Migrations. She was also the Andrew W. Mellon Writer-in-Residence at Rhodes University in 2018. She is currently the Francophone and Contributing editor for The Johannesburg Review of Books.
Idza Luhumyo is a Kenyan short story writer, whose work explores Kenyan coastal identities. In July 2020, Luhumyo was announced as the inaugural recipient of the Margaret Busby New Daughters of Africa Award. She was the winner of the 2021 Short Story Day Africa Prize with her story "Five Years Next Sunday", which also won the 2022 Caine Prize.
Woman at Point Zero is an English and Arabic language multimedia opera in one act, with music by British composer Bushra El-Turk and libretto by South African writer Stacy Hardy. It is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by Nawal El Saadawi.
Bushra El-Turk is a British composer and contemporary music educator of Lebanese parents. Named by the BBC as "one of the most inspiring 100 Women of today", she has written numerous compositions for live concerts, dance, theatre and multi-media performances, performed and broadcast on radio and television by prestigious musicians in various countries of Europe and the Middle East.
