The Standard Flying Sixteen/Flying Twenty is an automobile produced by the British Standard Motor Company from October 1935 to 1939. It, along with most of the other Flying Standard models, were announced in October 1935. [3] A standard is a flag and the reference to flying standards is to flying flags as well as to the airstream design of the cars. The Flying Sixteen was discontinued during 1937 and its place in the lineup taken by the four-cylinder Flying Fourteen.
The Flying Sixteen/Twenty was commonly a four-door, five-seat saloon with a gently tapering body and a split rear windshield, but other designs were also available. The Flying series used streamlined bodywork, with bodywork (from the a-pillar and back) shared between the Flying Twelve, Flying Sixteen, and Flying Twenty. The front end was different, and wheelbases differed to accommodate the various engines. [4] The Sixteen sat on a 116 in (2,950 mm) wheelbase, while Flying Twenty buyers could choose between 117 and 123 in (2,970 and 3,120 mm) wheelbases. [5]
The standard, fastback body was designed under direction of Arthur Ballard and was built by Briggs Motor Bodies. [4] Being of a somewhat bulbous appearance, the design is often called a "beetle-back." In addition to this, coachbuilders Avon also offered their "Waymaker" design - a more rakish, lower slung, four-door touring sedan - until their bankruptcy in late 1937. [6] The conventional shield-shaped radiator casing was replaced by a chromed vertically-barred "fencer's mask" grille late in 1937 for the 1938 model year. [5] This also brought with it a model name change, becoming the Flying Twenty 20A. For the 1939 model year, the "torpedo" (fastback) design was changed to a notchback look, becoming the 20CA in the process. [4] While production reportedly ended in 1939, the Flying Twenty remained in price lists into 1940.
The large Flying Standards used semi-elliptic leaf springs all around, while the steering box was a bishop cam and lever unit. Unusual for the time was the telescopically adjustable steering wheel. Cable-operated (by hand or foot) Bendix "Duo-Servo" brake system operating cast-iron alloy drum brakes was fitted. The four-speed manual had synchromesh on the top three gears (standard for all of the Flying Standards), transmitting power via a needle-bearing propeller shaft to a half-floating rear axle with a spiral bevel final drive. The different engines and wheelbases all received different final gear ratios, reflecting their intended usage. [5]
The smaller engine produces 56 bhp (42 kW) at 4,000 rpm, while the larger unit has 65 bhp (48 kW) on tap at 3,800 rpm. Claimed top speeds for the regular-bodied versions are 72 and 76 mph (116 and 122 km/h) respectively.
The Sixteen's and Twenty's engine and transmission were used by the SS 1, predecessors to the SS Jaguar 100 and Jaguar Cars. Because of this, nearly all Flying Sixteen and Flying Twentys have been used to create much more valuable SS replicas. [7] There is reportedly only one remaining Flying Sixteen still with the original engine. [7]
The Jaguar E-Type, or the Jaguar XK-E for the North American market, is a British front mid-engined sports car that was manufactured by Jaguar Cars Ltd from 1961 to 1974. Its combination of exceptional aesthetics, advanced technologies, high performance, and competitive pricing established the model as an icon of the motoring world. The E-Type's claimed 150 miles per hour (240 km/h) top speed, sub-7-second 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) acceleration, largely unitary body construction, front and rear independent suspension with disc brakes, mounted inboard at the rear, and rack-and-pinion steering, distinguished the car and spurred industry-wide changes.
The Buick Special was an automobile produced by Buick. It was usually Buick's lowest-priced model, starting out as a full-size car in 1936 and returning in 1961 as a mid-size. The Special was built for several decades and was offered as a coupe, sedan and later as a station wagon. When GM modernized their entry level products in the 1960s, the Special introduced the modern Buick V6 that became a core engine for GM for several decades and lived on in upgraded form until 2006.
The Cadillac V-16 was Cadillac's top-of-the-line model from its January 1930 launch until 1940. The V16 powered car was a first in the United States, both extremely expensive and exclusive, with every chassis being custom-finished to order. Only 4,076 were constructed in its 11-year run, with the majority built in its debut year before the Great Depression took strong hold. The onset of World War II reduced the sales, resulting in its demise. It was, however, at least three times cheaper than Bugatti Royale.

The SS Jaguar 100 is a British 2-seat sports car built between 1936 and 1939 by SS Cars Ltd of Coventry, England. The manufacturer's name 'SS Cars' used from 1934 maintained a link to the previous owner, Swallow Sidecar, founded in 1922 by Walmsley and Lyons to build motorcycle sidecars. In March 1945 the S. S. Cars shareholders agreed to change the name to Jaguar Cars Limited.
The Lanchester Motor Company Limited was a British car manufacturer in active trade between 1899 and 1955. Though the Lanchester Motor Company Limited is still registered as an active company and accounts are filed each year, the marque has been dormant since. As of 2014 it is marked as "non-trading".
The Studebaker Big Six was an automobile produced by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana between 1918 and 1926, being designated the Model EG (1918–21), the EK (1922–24) and the EP (1925–26); its name was due to the 127" wheelbase in comparison to the Studebaker Special Six at 120". In 1927, it was renamed the President (ES) pending introduction of a smaller and smoother straight-eight engine for new top-of-the-range models after January 1928.
SS Cars was a British manufacturer of sports saloon cars from 1934 until wartime 1940, and from March 1935 of a limited number of open 2-seater sports cars. From September 1935, their new models displayed a new name: SS Jaguar. By then, its business, which was founded in 1922, was run by and largely owned by William Lyons. Lyons had been partner with 1922 co-founder William Walmsley until Walmsley sold his shareholding in January 1935.
The Daimler Majestic Major DQ450 is a large luxury saloon produced by Daimler in Coventry, England, between November 1960 and 1968. It was fitted with a 4,561 cc V8 engine and was offered as a much more powerful supplement to their then current Daimler Majestic.
The Fiat 1300 and Fiat 1500 are a series of front-engine, rear-drive automobiles manufactured and marketed by Fiat from 1961 to 1967, replacing the Fiat 1400 and Fiat 1200 coupé, spyder and cabriolet. The 1300 and 1500 were essentially identical to each other except for their engine displacement, as indicated by their model names, and were offered in sedan/saloon, station wagon, convertible and coupé body styles which shared little mechanically with the other body styles except the 1500 engine.
Devin Enterprises was an American automotive manufacturer that operated from 1955 to 1964. Devin was mainly known for producing high quality fiberglass car bodies that were sold as kits, but they also produced automotive accessories as well as complete automobiles. The company was founded by Bill Devin.
The Alfa Romeo 6C name was used on road, race, and sports cars produced between 1927 and 1954 by Alfa Romeo; the "6C" name refers to the six cylinders of the car's straight-six engine. Bodies for these cars were made by coachbuilders such as James Young, Zagato, Touring Superleggera, Castagna, and Pinin Farina. Beginning in 1933 there was also a 6C version with an Alfa factory body, built in Portello. In the early 1920s Vittorio Jano received a commission to create a lightweight, high performance vehicle to replace the Giuseppe Merosi designed RL and RM models. The car was introduced in April 1925 at the Salone dell' Automobile di Milano as the 6C 1500. It was based on Alfa's P2 Grand Prix car, using a single overhead cam 1,487 cc in-line six-cylinder engine, producing 44 horsepower. In 1928 the 1500 Sport was presented, which was the first Alfa Romeo road car with double overhead camshafts.
The Hillman Fourteen is a medium-sized 4-cylinder car announced by Hillman's managing director Spencer Wilks, a son-in-law of William Hillman, at the end of September 1925. This new Fourteen substantially increased Hillman's market share and remained on sale into 1931. During this time it was the main product of the company.
Austin Twenty is a large car introduced by Austin after the end of the First World War in April 1919, and continued in production until 1930. After the Austin 20/6 model was introduced in 1927, the first model was referred to as the Austin 20/4.
The Flying Nine was a small family car produced by the British Standard Motor Company between July 1936 and 1940. It was the smallest of several relatively streamlined cars with which the company, in common with several UK mass market competitors, broadened and updated its range in the later 1930s. The Flying Standard series began with the Flying Twelve, Sixteen, and Twenty in October 1935, with smaller versions ranging down to 8HP added in the following years.
The Lanchester Ten and Lanchester Eleven were sold by The Lanchester Motor Company Limited from the Ten's announcement in September 1932 until 1951. Quite different from previous Lanchesters, the Ten was the second of Lanchester's new owner's new Daimler-linked Lanchester range. The names Ten and Eleven referred to the engine's rating for the annual tax and did not relate to the engine's power output.
The Rover Fourteen was a medium-sized family car and variants produced by the British Rover car company between 1924 and 1948. Civilian automobile production was interrupted in 1940 because of the war, but when the war ended in 1945, the Rover 14 returned to the market and remained available until replaced by the Rover 75 at the beginning of 1948.
The Packard Twelve was a range of V12-engined luxury automobiles built by the Packard Motor Car Company in Detroit, Michigan. The car was built from model year 1916 until 1923, then it returned 1933 until 1939. As a sign of changing times, the majority of second generation Packard Twelves received standard bodywork, with custom bodywork gradually losing favor. Many of the custom cars were actually only "semi-customs", with Dietrich assembling Packard-made bodies with special touches.
