Staniforth Range is a mountain range located in Gulf Province, Papua New Guinea. [1] Yeripa and Taripa villages are the nearest populated places to the range. [2] [3]

Gulf Province Place in Papua New Guinea

Gulf Province is a province of Papua New Guinea located on the southern coast. The provincial capital is Kerema. The 34,472 km² province is dominated by mountains, lowland river deltas, and grassland flood plains, the Kikori, Turama, Purari and Vailala rivers all meet the sea known as the Papuan Gulf. The province has the second-smallest population of all the provinces of Papua New Guinea with 106,898 inhabitants. The province shares land borders with Western Province to the west, Southern Highlands, Chimbu, and Eastern Highlands to the north, Morobe Province to the east, and Central Province to the southeast.

History

The mountain range is named after Miles Staniforth Cater Smith, an Australian politician who played a role in the passing of the Papua Act 1905 which saw the transfer of the territory of Papua from Britain to Australia. [4] [5]

The Papua Act 1905 was an act passed by the Parliament of Australia to transfer the territory of Papua from Britain to Australia. The long title of the Act was: An Act to provide for the acceptance of British New Guinea as a Territory under the authority of the Commonwealth, and for the Government thereof. It formally incorporated Papua as an external territory of Australia and remained in effect until Papua's merger with New Guinea with the passage of the Papua and New Guinea Act 1949.
