The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Kerala is an autonomous body entrusted with planning, implementation and evaluation of all academic programmes from pre-school to higher secondary levels. [1]

Contents

It functions as a research and Development institute at the state level by providing guidance, support and assistance to the State Education Department in its endeavor to improve the quality of elementary and secondary education and teacher education. [2]

Administration

The governing body includes Hon. Minister of Education as the Chairman, the secretary of General education department as Vice Chairman and the director of SCERT as the convener. [2]

Function

It is established on the lines of NCERT at the national level and functions as an apex body in the academic matters of school education from Pre-primary to Higher secondary level. The multifarious functions of the institution ranges from policy formulation, curriculum development, preparation of teaching-learning materials, educational researches, vocationalisation of education etc. to teacher education programmes in the state

Textbooks prepared by scert are used by Kerala Board of Public Examination from class I to XII, with exemption for few subjects

The textbooks are prepared and printed in four languages:Malayalam, English,Tamil,Kannada [4]

The textbook are in colour-print the textbooks till high school level is printed from The Kerala Books and Publications Society [5] and textbooks for higher secondery level is printed from Kerala State Centre for Advanced Printing & training [6]

The importance and antiquity of education in Kerala are underscored by the state's ranking as among the most literate in the country. The educational transformation of Kerala was triggered by the efforts of the Church Mission Society missionaries, who were the pioneers that promoted mass education in Kerala, in the early decades of the 19th century.
