Staten Island Legal Services (SILS) is an American non-profit agency providing free civil legal assistance to low-income people on Staten Island in New York City. [1] SILS has served more than 10,000 clients after its creation in 2004. [2]

Services

The agency provides legal services in the areas including of family law, domestic violence, immigration, foreclosure prevention, and disaster recovery services (post–Hurricane Sandy). [3] [4] [5] [6] SILS also provides advice or referral information if unable to provide representation. [7] [8] [9] Special projects have included defending the rights of the disabled to reasonable accommodations from the New York City Housing Authority. [10] [11]

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is a public development corporation which provides public housing in New York City, and is the largest public housing authority in North America. Created in 1934 as the first agency of its kind in the United States, it aims to provide decent, affordable housing for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers throughout the five boroughs of New York City. NYCHA also administers a citywide Section 8 Leased Housing Program in rental apartments. NYCHA developments include single and double family houses, apartment units, singular floors, and shared small building units, and commonly have large income disparities with their respective surrounding neighborhood or community. These developments, particularly those including large-scale apartment buildings, are often referred to in popular culture as "projects."

Staten Island Academy is a coeducational, college-preparatory day school located on a 14-acre (57,000 m2) campus in Staten Island, New York City, United States. Founded in 1884 by Anton Methfessel, it is the oldest independent school on Staten Island, and is the only independent school in the borough. It educates students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. The current enrollment is around 390 students, with a student to teacher ratio of 7:1. Eileen Corigliano is the current head of school. The school is composed of three divisions: Lower School, Pre-K-Gr. 4; Middle School, Gr. 5-8; Upper School, Gr. 9-12. The Head of Lower, Middle and Upper School is Eileen Corigliano. The campus has seven buildings: the Early Childhood Building, the Art Barn, Haugen Hall, Kearns Hall, Crowe Hall, Alumni Hall and the OJ Buck Gymnasium. The school's accreditations include the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and the New York State Association of Independent Schools. It is chartered and registered by the Board of Regents, University of the State of New York.

Both districts consisted of Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn. Grimm is a member of the Republican Party; during his time in office was the sole Republican to represent a significant portion of New York City.

Empire Outlets New York City is a 350,000-square-foot (33,000 m2) retail complex in the St. George neighborhood of Staten Island in New York City. Construction on Empire Outlets started in 2015, and the complex opened on May 15, 2019. Tentative plans called for 100 stores, but there is only space for about 70 stores, less than half of which are currently occupied. It is the first outlet mall in New York City. The mall is located next to the St. George Terminal, a major ferry, train, and bus hub.

The NYC Arts Cypher is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2006 by Charlie Balducci with the intention of creating a safe place for the youth of New York City to express themselves and detour them from crime. Since its inception the NYC Arts Cypher has hosted various events that have raised awareness to issues such as bullying, prescription drug abuse, 9/11, vandalism, and more. The organization offers creative services, from video production to event planning. The center is a 501c3 non-profit organization and is funded primarily from the creative services they offer. Their second largest source of revenue is their annual Halloween haunted house.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2015 New York's 11th congressional district special election</span>

A special election for New York's 11th congressional district was held on May 5, 2015, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Michael Grimm. Grimm, a member of the Republican Party, announced on December 30, 2014, that he would resign from the House effective January 5, 2015, and not take his seat for a third term following his guilty plea for tax evasion. On May 5, 2015, Republican candidate Dan Donovan defeated his Democratic challenger Vincent Gentile in the election and filled the vacant seat.

<i>Ollis</i>-class ferry

The Ollis-class ferries are a trio of passenger ferries on the Staten Island Ferry, the first of which entered service in 2022. The class is named after US Army Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis, a Staten Islander who was killed in action during the War in Afghanistan in 2013.

Michael W. Reilly Jr. is a member of the New York State Assembly, representing the 62nd district since 2019. He is a Republican. The district includes portions of the South shore of Staten Island. Reilly formerly served in the United States Army Reserve and was an officer with the New York City Police Department. He previously served as the president of the Community Education Council (CEC) for District 31, which includes all of Staten Island. He has a BS in Legal Studies from John Jay College. He resides in Eltingville with his wife and family.
