Stefan Dohr (born September 3, 1965) is a German horn player and principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (Berliner Philharmoniker).

Biography

Born in Münster, Dohr obtained the Solo Horn position of the Frankfurt Opera House at the age of 19.

He held the same position with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. In 1993 Stefan Dohr was chosen to play principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic.

In March 2008 he played the world premiere of a horn concerto specially composed for him by Austrian composer Herbert Willi.

In May 2021, Dohr was one of 10 new members elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, alongside Marika Field, Katarina Karnéus, Jonas Knutsson, Sten Sandell, Đuro Živković, Keiko Abe, Giancarlo Andretta, Richard Sparks, and Quincy Jones. [1]

The Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra is a Spanish orchestra based in Málaga. Founded in 1991, the Philharmonic play regularly at the Teatro Cervantes in Málaga. Since 2014, its principal conductor has been Manuel Hernández-Silva.

Zdeněk Tylšar was a Czech horn player and music pedagogue, brother of hornist Bedřich Tylšar. He was the principal hornist and leader of the horn section with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra for almost 40 years. During his career, he created numerous recordings and performed worldwide.

In 1882–3 Richard Strauss wrote his Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Op. 11, in two versions, one for piano accompaniment and one with an orchestra. The horn concerto has become the most frequently performed horn concerto written in the 19th century. The German horn is a brass instrument made of tubing wrapped into a coil with a flared bell, and in bands and orchestras is the most widely used of three types of horn, the other two being the French horn and the Vienna horn. Its use among professional players has become so universal that it is only in France and Vienna that any other kind of horn is used today. A musician who plays the German horn is called a horn player. The word "German" is used only to distinguish this instrument from the now-rare French and Viennese instruments. Although the expression "French horn" is still used colloquially in English for any orchestral horn, since the 1930s professional musicians and scholars have generally avoided this term in favour of just "horn". Vienna horns today are played only in Vienna, and are made only by Austrian firms. German horns, by contrast, are not all made by German manufacturers, nor are all French-style instruments made in France.

Abel Pereira is a Portuguese horn player. He played as soloist and principal horn in major European orchestras, such as Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Berlin Philharmonic and London Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 2014, he has been Principal Horn of Washington's National Symphony Orchestra. Pereira won several awards and prizes, including the 1998 European Master Prize.

Mathieu Dufour is a French classical flutist. He is a former principal flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic.

Eckart Haupt is a German flutist and university teacher. The Staatskapelle Dresden described him on their homepage as one of the "leading flutists of the present".

Hans Abrahamsen's Concerto for Horn and Orchestra was composed between 2018 and 2019 on a commission from the Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker and co-commissions from the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the NTR Zaterdag Matinee, the Seattle Symphony, and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. The world premiere was given by the Berlin Philharmonic and their principal horn player Stefan Dohr conducted by Paavo Järvi at the Berliner Philharmonie on 29 January 2020.
