He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pretoria and a master's degree in economics from the University of Johannesburg. He later completed postgraduate diplomas in arbitration, computer science, real estate, and mergers and acquisitions. [6] [7]

Swanepoel began working in the real estate industry in the 1980s, with experience in property development, brokerage, franchising, and publishing. Over the course of his career, he has served as president or chief executive officer of nine organizations. [6] [7]

He began publishing analysis on real estate trends in South Africa in 1987 and continued this work after relocating to the United States in 1994. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he authored the Real Estate Confronts series, which examined emerging trends and structural changes within the industry. [16] In 2022, he founded Real Estate News, a digital media publication covering developments in the residential real estate industry. [17]
