Stephan Narison is a Malagasy theoretical high-energy physicist specialized in quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the gauge theory of strong interactions. He is the founder of the Series of International Conferences in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD-Montpellier) and of the Series of International Conferences in High-Energy Physics (HEPMAD-Madagascar).

Contents

He works on QCD spectral sum rules (QSSR) or SVZ sum rules which have been introduced by M.A. Shifman, A.I. Vainshtein and V.I. Zakahrov [1] [2] for studying the non-perturbative dynamics of hadrons.

Scientific contributions

Among his various publications (237 papers as of January 2014), his most famous work is the first determination of the QCD coupling αs from hadronic heavy lepton τ-decays [3] [4] where the running of αs from the τ-mass until the Z-boson mass demonstrates its 1/log Q^2 behavior predicted by asymptotic freedom.

He has contributed to the definition of the running and invariant quark masses in QCD [5] [6] [7] and on the tests of the gluonium/glueball nature of the scalar meson σ/f0(500) using QSSR, [8] [9] [10] ππ and γγ scatterings data. [11] [12] [13] [14] His important estimates of the light [15] [16] and heavy [17] [18] [19] [20] quark masses and leptonic heavy-light mesons decay constants [21] [22] [23] [24] [25] are compiled in the Particle Data Group (PDG). [26]

He has also contributed to the QCD U(1) anomaly effect in the spin of the proton [27] [28] [29] and on the parametrization of the non-calculated higher order terms of the perturbative series in terms of the square of the tachyonic gluon mass not included in the standard Wilson Operator Product Expansion (OPE). [30] [31] [32]

He has contributed to the estimation of the hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment aμ=(gμ-2)/2. [33] [34] [35]

String field theory (SFT) is a formalism in string theory in which the dynamics of relativistic strings is reformulated in the language of quantum field theory. This is accomplished at the level of perturbation theory by finding a collection of vertices for joining and splitting strings, as well as string propagators, that give a Feynman diagram-like expansion for string scattering amplitudes. In most string field theories, this expansion is encoded by a classical action found by second-quantizing the free string and adding interaction terms. As is usually the case in second quantization, a classical field configuration of the second-quantized theory is given by a wave function in the original theory. In the case of string field theory, this implies that a classical configuration, usually called the string field, is given by an element of the free string Fock space.

Technicolor theories are models of physics beyond the Standard Model that address electroweak gauge symmetry breaking, the mechanism through which W and Z bosons acquire masses. Early technicolor theories were modelled on quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the "color" theory of the strong nuclear force, which inspired their name.

Hadronization is the process of the formation of hadrons out of quarks and gluons. There are two main branches of hadronization: quark-gluon plasma (QGP) transformation and colour string decay into hadrons. The transformation of quark-gluon plasma into hadrons is studied in lattice QCD numerical simulations, which are explored in relativistic heavy-ion experiments. Quark-gluon plasma hadronization occurred shortly after the Big Bang when the quark–gluon plasma cooled down to the Hagedorn temperature when free quarks and gluons cannot exist. In string breaking new hadrons are forming out of quarks, antiquarks and sometimes gluons, spontaneously created from the vacuum.

A conformal anomaly, scale anomaly, trace anomaly or Weyl anomaly is an anomaly, i.e. a quantum phenomenon that breaks the conformal symmetry of the classical theory.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Three-body force</span> Phenomenon in particle physics

A three-body force is a force that does not exist in a system of two objects but appears in a three-body system. In general, if the behaviour of a system of more than two objects cannot be described by the two-body interactions between all possible pairs, as a first approximation, the deviation is mainly due to a three-body force.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Two-photon physics</span> Branch of particle physics concerning interactions between two photons

Two-photon physics, also called gamma–gamma physics, is a branch of particle physics that describes the interactions between two photons. Normally, beams of light pass through each other unperturbed. Inside an optical material, and if the intensity of the beams is high enough, the beams may affect each other through a variety of non-linear effects. In pure vacuum, some weak scattering of light by light exists as well. Also, above some threshold of this center-of-mass energy of the system of the two photons, matter can be created.

In physics, a renormalon is a particular source of divergence seen in perturbative approximations to quantum field theories (QFT). When a formally divergent series in a QFT is summed using Borel summation, the associated Borel transform of the series can have singularities as a function of the complex transform parameter. The renormalon is a possible type of singularity arising in this complex Borel plane, and is a counterpart of an instanton singularity. Associated with such singularities, renormalon contributions are discussed in the context of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and usually have the power-like form as functions of the momentum . They are cited against the usual logarithmic effects like .

The photon structure function, in quantum field theory, describes the quark content of the photon. While the photon is a massless boson, through certain processes its energy can be converted into the mass of massive fermions. The function is defined by the process e + γ → e + hadrons. It is uniquely characterized by the linear increase in the logarithm of the electronic momentum transfer logQ2 and by the approximately linear rise in x, the fraction of the quark momenta within the photon. These characteristics are borne out by the experimental analyses of the photon structure function.
