The politics of Trinidad and Tobago function within the framework of a unitary state regulated by a parliamentary democracy modelled on that of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, from which the country gained its independence in 1962. Under the 1976 republican Constitution, the monarch was replaced as head of state by a President chosen by an electoral college composed of the members of the bicameral Parliament, consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago is the legislative branch of Trinidad and Tobago. The Parliament is bicameral. Besides the President of Trinidad and Tobago, it is composed of the House of Representatives, which is composed of the Speaker of the House of Representatives in addition to 41 directly elected members serving a five-year term in single-seat constituencies, and the Senate which has 31 members appointed by the President: 16 Government Senators appointed on the advice of the Prime Minister, 6 Opposition Senators appointed on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition and 9 Independent Senators appointed by the President to represent other sectors of civil society. It is at present the only parliament in the world with an incumbent female President, President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives and Leader of the Opposition and made history by appointing the Caribbean's first and only transgender parliamentarian on 15 February 2022. As of 20 April 2021, there are only 24 female members, or 32.9% and eight members born in Tobago or 11.0%.
The Senate of Trinidad and Tobago is the appointed upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago, along with the President and House of Representatives of Trinidad and Tobago. The Senate currently sits at the Red House. The Senate has 31 members all appointed by the President: 16 Government Senators appointed on the advice of the Prime Minister, 6 Opposition Senators appointed on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition and 9 Independent Senators appointed on the discretion of the President from outstanding persons who represent other sectors of civil society. The presiding officer, the President of the Senate, is elected from among the Senators who are not Ministers or Parliamentary Secretaries. A senator must be at least 25 years old and a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago. The current President of the Senate is Senator Nigel de Freitas. As of 20 April 2021, there are only 13 female senators, or 41.9% and 6 Tobagonian senators or 19.4%. The Senate made history on 15 February 2022 by appointing Jowelle de Souza as an acting opposition senator, thus making her the Caribbean's first and only transgender parliamentarian.
The Pitch Lake is the largest natural deposit of bitumen in the world, estimated to contain 10 million tons. It is located in La Brea in southwest Trinidad, within the Siparia Regional Corporation. The lake covers about 0.405 square kilometres and is reported to be 76.2 metres deep.
Ralph Maraj is a Trinidad and Tobago politician, actor, playwright, and teacher. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs under a People's National Movement (PNM) administration, Minister of Communication and Information Technology under a United National Congress (UNC) administration, and was a founding member of National Team Unity before returning to the PNM to work as a speech writer for Prime Minister Patrick Manning. Prior to entering politics in 1991, Maraj worked as a teacher at Naparima College in San Fernando. He also attended that school. He wrote several plays, the most successful being Cynthia Sweetness. Maraj also starred in the movies The Right and the Wrong (1970) and Bim (1974), described by Bruce Paddington as "one of the most important films to be produced in Trinidad and Tobago".
The Trinidad and Tobago Express, better known as Daily Express, is one of three daily newspapers in Trinidad and Tobago. The Daily Express as per its masthead is published by the Caribbean Communications Network (CCN) and is headquartered on Independence Square in Port of Spain. The newspaper commenced operations on 6 June 1967. The website for the Trinidad and Tobago Express was first registered in 1997 and launched subsequently very soon thereafter. The Express newspaper is the second-oldest of the daily Trinidad and Tobago newspapers.
The Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway, sometimes referred to as SHH, is the major north–south highway on the island of Trinidad, in Trinidad and Tobago. It runs for 51.2 km.
Basdeo Panday was a Trinidadian and Tobagonian statesman, lawyer, politician, trade unionist, economist, and actor who served as the fifth Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago from 1995 to 2001. He was the first person of Indian descent along with being the first Hindu to hold the office of Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. He was first elected to Parliament in 1976 as the Member for Couva North, Panday served as Leader of the Opposition four times between 1976 and 2010 and was a founding member of the United Labour Front (ULF), the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR), and the United National Congress (UNC). He served as leader of the ULF and UNC, and was President General of the All Trinidad Sugar and General Workers' Trade Union from 1973 to 1995.
General elections were held in Trinidad and Tobago on 5 November 2007. Nomination day was 15 October. Five parties contested the elections; the ruling People's National Movement, the official opposition United National Congress–Alliance, the Congress of the People, the Tobago United Front–Democratic Action Congress and the Democratic National Assembly. Five independent candidates also ran.
Julian Stanley "Jake" Kenny was a Trinidadian zoologist, columnist, author and Professor of Zoology at the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies and an Independent Senator in the fifth (1995–2000) and sixth (2001) Parliaments. He is best known for his work on freshwater fishes and anurans, and for his contribution to the conservation movement in Trinidad and Tobago.
The 2010–11 Trinidad and Tobago FA Trophy was the 81st season of the FA Trophy, which is the oldest football competition for teams in Trinidad and Tobago. Joe Public entered as the tournament's defending champion, who defeated W Connection in the 2009 final. The tournament commenced on 17 November 2010, with 32 teams competing in single elimination matches and concluded on 25 January 2011.
Keith Christopher Rowley, is a Trinidadian politician serving as the seventh prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago, first elected into office on 9 September 2015 and again following the 2020 general election. He has led the People's National Movement (PNM) since May 2010 and was Leader of the Opposition from 2010 to 2015. He has also served as the Member of the House of Representatives for Diego Martin West since 1991. He is a volcanologist by profession, holding a doctorate in geology, specializing in geochemistry.

Raoul Pantin was a Trinidad and Tobago journalist, editor, poet and playwright. He penned six plays during his career. Pantin survived the 1990 Jamaat al Muslimeen coup attempt and terrorist attack, in which he and other employees of the Trinidad and Tobago Television (TTT) station were held hostage for six days. He later chronicled his first-hand account of the coup attempt in a 163-page book, Days of Wrath: The 1990 Coup in Trinidad and Tobago.
General elections were held in Trinidad and Tobago on Monday, 10 August 2020, to elect 41 members to the 12th Trinidad and Tobago Republican Parliament. It was the 14th election since gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1962 and the 22nd national election in Trinidad and Tobago ever. Tracy Davidson-Celestine, political leader of the Tobago Council of the People's National Movement (PNM) became the first woman to lead a Tobagonian political party with representation in the House of Representatives. Additionally, two of the three largest parties elected in 2015, the United National Congress (UNC) and the Congress of the People (COP), were led by women.

The 2025 Trinidad and Tobago general election will be held no later than November 28, 2025 to elect all 41 members of the House of Representatives. It will be the 100th anniversary of general elections in Trinidad and Tobago, the first having taken place in 1925. The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) March 13, 2024 report on the review of constituency boundaries saw the renaming of five constituencies from this general election with Arouca/Maloney becoming Trincity/Maloney, D'Abadie/O'Meara renamed Malabar/Mausica, Lopinot/Bon Air West changed to Arouca/Lopinot, St Joseph becoming Aranguez/St Joseph, and Pointe-a-Pierre renamed Claxton Bay and the report also suggesting the maintaining of the current number of constituencies, with 39 seats in Trinidad and two in Tobago. No by-election was held after Lisa Morris-Julian, Minister in the Ministry of Education and MP for D'Abadie/O'Meara, who was reselected by the PNM as the candidate for the renamed Malabar/Mausica seat on 3 December 2024 died in a house fire with two of her children on 16 December 2024.
Ravi Ratiram is a Trinidad and Tobago politician representing the United National Congress (UNC). He has served as a Member of Parliament in the House of Representatives for Couva North since the 2020 general election. He is the current party organiser for the UNC.
Nyan Gadsby-Dolly is a Trinidad and Tobago politician from the People's National Movement. She has been MP for St. Ann's East in the House of Representatives since 2015.
