Stephen Tompkins

Stephen Tompkins (born October 4, 1971, in Cleveland, Ohio) is an American artist, animator, and composer based in Southern California. He grew up in Avon Lake, Ohio, near Cleveland, and graduated from Avon Lake High School in 1990. [1] His work is associated with the 'Hardcore' Pop Surrealism movement [2]

Tompkins' work has been exhibited in numerous galleries throughout the United States and Europe since 1997. His work was exhibited in BLK/MRKT Gallery's Artist Annual in 2007. [3]

His work has been exhibited alongside such artists as Daniel Johnston (in Austin, Texas) in a two-man exhibit titled "The Art of Daniel Johnston and Stephen Tompkins" and Ron English and Steven Hopwood-Lewis ("Melodic Inversions & Contrary Motions" exhibition in Dallas). [4]

His work has appeared in publications including LA Weekly , [5] Raw Vision Magazine, Monopol Magazin, [6] New American Paintings [7] and Juxtapoz . Some of his work was published in the book BLK/MRKT TWO [3] by Die Gestalten Verlag  [ de ] and in Year One Rewind, a survey of urban and graffiti art by Last Gasp Press.

His animated short, Gummymorph, appears in the film Freak Out in Cucamonga, a documentary about the early studio years of Frank Zappa. In February 2009, he released a Digital-8 collection of 13 music videos that he directed, filmed and produced of Daniel Johnston filmed in Johnston's hometown of Waller, Texas. The videos and MP3s were released as digital downloads under the name "Daniel Johnston at Home LIVE". [8]

He acted as an EMT in the Werner Herzog film My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done . [9]

In December 2009, he was nominated as a composer for a Maverick Movie Award in the short film category for "Best Original Score". [10]

Tompkins was nominated for the 2010 San Diego Art Prize Award by curator Robin Clark, PhD of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and his work was selected to be part of the MCASD exhibit "Here Not There" which opened in June 2010. [11]

He is currently represented worldwide by Ernst Hilger Galerie in Vienna, Austria. [12]

Alexis Rockman is an American contemporary artist known for his paintings that provide depictions of future landscapes as they might exist with impacts of climate change and evolution influenced by genetic engineering. He has exhibited his work in the United States since 1985, including a 2004 exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, and internationally since 1989. He lives with his wife, Dorothy Spears in Warren, CT and NYC.

Known for his original extensive vocabulary of graphic drawings which use the visual language of public signage, corporate logos, and contemporary iconography, McGinness creates paintings, sculptures, and environments. McGinness is interested in assuming the power of this anonymous aesthetic in order to share personal expressions. His work is in the permanent public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Cincinnati Art Museum, MUSAC in Spain, and the Misumi Collection in Japan.

Ai Kijima, born in 1970 in Tokyo, Japan, is a contemporary artist residing in New York City. She is noted for her use of traditional quilting techniques to create colorful fabric collages from found materials such as bed sheets, vintage kimono, t-shirts, curtains, and dishtowels.

Betty Hahn is an American photographer known for working in alternative and early photographic processes. She completed both her BFA (1963) and MFA (1966) at Indiana University. Initially, Hahn worked in other two-dimensional art mediums before focusing on photography in graduate school. She is well-recognized due to her experimentation with experimental photographic methods which incorporate different forms of media. By transcending traditional concepts of photography, Hahn challenges the viewer not only to assess the content of the image, but also to contemplate the photographic object itself.

Laura Schiff Bean, born in New York state, is a contemporary visual artist. Prior to becoming a career artist, she earned a degree in psychology from George Washington University and then worked in print advertising in Boston, MA. Laura Schiff Bean went on to get her Masters in Fine Arts (MFA) from School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts.
