Steve Canal (born January 17, 1980) is an American author, public speaker, branding expert and former basketball player based in New York City. [1] [2] [3]
Canal was born in New York City in 1980. His parents were born in Haiti and came to United States in late 1970s. Canal received his early education in Nyack and attended Fordham University where he received his graduation degree in sociology, in 2002. Canal represented the Fordham Rams in Atlantic 10 Conference basketball games between 1998 and 2002. [4]
Canal began his basketball career in 1998 while attending Fordham University in New York City. [5] Canal represented Fordham Rams in 92 games, spreading over four seasons of Atlantic 10 Conference between 1998 and 2002. He played at forward position and scored over 340 points. [6]
After basketball, Canal started his professional career as an operational manager at Vital Marketing, New York, in 2003. In 2011, Canal joined MillerCoors, a beer brewing company based in Chicago. Canal is currently serving as a National Community Affairs Lead at MillerCoors in New York City. [7] He is accountable for the growth and execution of community investment and outreach strategies at the organization. [8] [9]
In 2017, Canal authored his debut book, The Mind of a Winner. [10] The book was published in July with contributions from Daymond John, Barbara Corcoran, Enitan Bereola II, Grammy award winner 2 Chainz and Kenny Smith. [11] The Mind of a Winner focuses on personal growth of an individual. The book rose to No. 1 on the Amazon bestseller list in August 2017. [12] [13] Canal is also the founder and CEO at The Brand Executive, a personal development firm based in New York City. [14]
In 2015, Canal married his long-term girlfriend, Swin Cash, in Atlanta, Georgia. [15] [16] Cash is an executive with the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans [17] and played in the Women's National Basketball Association. [18]

A prolific scorer and rebounder, as well as a capable ball handler and defender, she helped lead the University of Connecticut women's basketball team to national titles in 2000 and 2002. In her second WNBA season, she led the Detroit Shock to their first ever WNBA title. In 2015, she was named a studio analyst for MSG Networks covering the New York Knicks pre-games and post-games as well as the weekly coaches show. In 2017, Cash was named the Director of franchise development for the New York Liberty. Cash was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on September 9, 2022.

The Shooting Stars competition was a National Basketball Association (NBA) contest during All-Star Weekend that was held on the Saturday before the All-Star Game. It involved a current NBA player, a WNBA player, and a retired NBA player competing together in a shooting competition. From 2004 to 2012, players represented their teams' cities. Starting in 2013, the NBA player chose both a WNBA player and the retired player to compete on his team. The competition itself was time based, involving shooting from four locations of increasing difficulty and making all four shots in sequential order. The first shot was a 10-ft bank shot from the right angle, the second was straight-on jump shot from the top of the key, the third was an NBA three-point shot from the left angle and the fourth is a half-court shot. There was a two-minute time limit for each attempt and the top two times advanced to a head-to-head final round. The event was held each All-Star Weekend from 2003–04. In 2007–08, Team San Antonio became the event's first two-time winner. Detroit followed suit in 2008–09 with their second title. In 2005–06, Team San Antonio set the course record with 25.1 seconds. In 2010-11, Team Atlanta became the first team to win the event with a time over one minute. From 2013-15, Team Bosh became the first back-to-back and three time winner. Starting with the 2016 NBA All-Star Game, the contest has been retired and removed from All Star Weekend.
