The National Rugby League (NRL) is Australia's top-level domestic men's rugby league club competition. It contains clubs from the original Sydney club Rugby League competition, which had been running continuously since 1908. The NRL formed in the aftermath of the 1990s' Super League war as a joint partnership between the Australian governing body, the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and media giant News Corporation-controlled Super League, after both organisations ran premierships parallel to each other in 1997. This partnership was dissolved in February 2012, with control of the NRL going to the independently formed Australian Rugby League Commission.
The North Sydney Bears are an Australian rugby league football club based in North Sydney, New South Wales. They compete in the New South Wales Cup, having exited the National Rugby League following the 1999 NRL season after 90 years in the Sydney competition then two in the NRL. The Bears are based on Sydney's Lower North Shore, and have played at North Sydney Oval since 1910. The club debuted in the 1947 New South Wales Rugby Football League season and currently host the majority of its home games from Brookvale Oval, while training at the New South Wales Academy of Sport in Narrabeen. The club hold the record of longest period in Australian Rugby League history without a wooden spoon.
The Gold Coast Titans are a professional rugby league football club, based on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The club competes in the National Rugby League (NRL) premiership, Australia's elite rugby league competition. It is the newest of the sixteen clubs in the league, having commenced its inaugural season on 18 March 2007. Since 2008, the Titans have played their home games at Cbus Super Stadium in Robina, Queensland.
The Adelaide Rams were an Australian professional rugby league football club based in Adelaide, South Australia. The team was formed in 1995 for the planned rebel Super League competition. The Rams lasted two seasons, the first in the Super League competition in 1997 and the second in the first season of the National Rugby League (NRL) in 1998. The Rams were not a successful club, winning only 13 out of 42 games. However crowd numbers in the first season were the fifth highest of any first-grade club that year, but dwindled to sixteenth in the second season. The Adelaide club was shut down at the end of the 1998 season as a result of poor on-field performances, dwindling crowd numbers, financial losses and a reduction in the number of teams in the NRL. They remain the only team from the state of South Australia to have participated in top-level rugby league in Australia.
The Gold Coast Chargers were a professional rugby league club which played in the New South Wales Rugby League premiership from 1988 to 1994, the Australian Rugby League premiership from 1995 to 1997, and the National Rugby League premiership in 1998. They first played under the name Gold Coast-Tweed Giants from 1988 to 1989, then Gold Coast Seagulls from 1990 to 1995, very briefly as the Gold Coast Gladiators and finally Gold Coast Chargers from 1996 to 1998.
The 1999 NRL season was the 92nd season of professional rugby league football in Australia, and the second to be run by the National Rugby League. With the exclusion of the Adelaide Rams and Gold Coast Chargers, and the merger of the St. George Dragons and Illawarra Steelers, seventeen teams competed for the NRL Premiership during the 1999 season, which culminated in the first grand final to be played at Stadium Australia. The St George Illawarra Dragons, the first joint-venture club to appear in the grand final, played against the Melbourne Storm, who won the premiership in only their second season.

Geoffrey "Geoff" Toovey, also known by the nickname of "Toovs" or "Tooves", is the former head coach of the Bradford Bulls and former professional rugby league footballer. Toovey played halfback for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, then played as a hooker later in his career at the Northern Eagles. He played 286 first-grade matches in all, and captained Manly to the 1996 ARL premiership and the 1995 and 1997 grand finals. He played in 13 international matches for Australia between 1991 and 1998. Toovey is the former head coach of Manly-Warringah.
The 1996 ARL premiership was the 89th season of professional rugby league football in Australia, and the second to be administered by the Australian Rugby League (ARL). Twenty teams contested the premiership, including five Sydney-based foundation teams, another six from Sydney, two from greater New South Wales, four from Queensland, and one each from New Zealand, the Australian Capital Territory and Western Australia. Ultimately two Sydney clubs, the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles and St. George Dragons contested the grand final.
Wayne Bartrim, is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. He was selected to represent Australia and Queensland during his career, which he spent playing for the Gold Coast Seagulls, St. George Dragons and the St. George Illawarra Dragons in Australia and the Castleford Tigers in England. Bartrim primarily played his club career as a lock, but played his representative career as a hooker.
Jamie Goddard is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played as a hooker in the 1990s and 2000s.
Graham Mackay is an Australian former international and state representative rugby league footballer whose club career spanned Ten Australian and English clubs, including Western Suburbs, Penrith, Gold Coast Chargers, Hull FC and the Ipswich Jets in a sixteen-year top grade career. His position of choice was on the wing, though he played centre later in his career.
The 2008 National Rugby League season consisted of 26 weekly regular season rounds, starting on 14 March, followed by four weeks of play-offs, culminating in a Grand Final on 5 October.
Ryan "Stanky Puss" Simpkins is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played for the Penrith Panthers and Gold Coast Titans in the National Rugby League. He played as a lock, second-row and hooker.
Jason Nicol is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. He played for the Penrith Panthers, Gold Coast Chargers, South Sydney Rabbitohs and the North Queensland Cowboys in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition, ARL and NRL competitions. Nicol also played for the Salford City Reds in England.
Jim Lenihan is an Australian professional rugby league coach who is the assistant coach for the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL and a former professional rugby league footballer.
Tony Durheim is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. He played for the Gold Coast in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition, ARL and NRL competitions. Durheim was one of the club's longest serving players and oversaw a number of name changes in his nine years with the team.
Adam Hayden is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played for the Sydney City Roosters, Manly Sea Eagles, and Northern Eagles. His position of choice was five-eighth.
