Stephen Thomas Schmuhl (born March 1, 1993, in Denver, Colorado) is an American competitive swimmer who competes in medley events, and was a member of the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) team and the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games team. [1]

Swimming career

2008–2010

In 2010, Schmuhl attended the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games. He competed in the 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle and 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays. The team placed 5th in the 400 freestyle relay. Schmuhl placed 12th in the 100 backstroke in a time of 57.58. [2]

In 2008 Schmuhl competed at the AT&T Winter Junior National Championships. Schmuhl placed 2nd in the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:46.82 and 100 freestyle in a time of 44.97. Schmuhl also swam in the 200 freestyle. In the prelims he set a junior national meet record of 1:37.70. In the finals, Schmuhl was a time of 1:35.98, which broke Michael Phelps national age group record. That time is the fastest time ever swum by a 15-year-old in the even at the time. [3]

2011–2014

At the 2014 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, he placed 4th in the 400 IM and recorded top 8 finishes in the 200 fly and 200 IM as well. In September 2013, Schmuhl was named to the USA Swimming National Team in the 200 and 400 IM after finishing among the top six American times. Schmuhl notably placed 2nd in the 200 butterfly at the B1G Championships and 5th at the 2013 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in a new Indiana University school record time of 3:41,98.

In 2013 Schmuhl was part of the Indiana University Relay Rally that set several world records. Schmuhl held the world record in the 400m Mixed Freestyle relay until it was broken by another team.

At the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m), [1] he placed 12th in the 400 Individual Medley, in a time of 4:10.38. [4]

At the 2012 United States Olympic Trials (swimming) Schmuhl placed 11th in the 400 IM in a time of 4:21.78. [5] Schmuhl also competed in the 200 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 IM, 200 butterfly, 100 butterfly, and 100 backstroke.

At the 2012 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Schmuhl placed 14th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:45.06. In preliminary heats, Schmuhl swam a time of 1:44.44, the 4th fastest time in Indiana Hoosiers swimming history. That swim earned Schmuhl All-American honors. Schmuhl also earned All-American honors in the 200 and 400 medley relays. [1]

Schmuhl was a student-athlete at Indiana University training under coaches Ray Looze and Mike Westphal. [1] Schmuhl began attending Indiana University in the fall of 2011. He was a marketing major in the Kelley School of Business.

2019

In 2019, Schmuhl ranked 2nd in the FINA Masters World Rankings, Age 25 - 29 in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 56.58. [6] He won the United States Masters National Championships in Mission Viejo, California in the 100 butterfly.

Personal life

Schmuhl is the son of Larry and Pamela Schmuhl. His father Larry is the owner of Blackjack Pizza. He grew up in The Pinery, Colorado. In 2004, Schmuhl moved to Broomfield, Colorado, with his family. He swam at the Boulder Swim Club in high school. Schmuhl attended Legacy High School (Broomfield, Colorado). He swam for the Legacy Lightning high school swim team in 2008 and 2009. [7] In those years, he was state champion and in 2008 he was named Denver Post "Swimmer of the Year". [8] His father competed in track and field events for the University of Northern Colorado. Schmuhl has two brothers, including an identical twin brother, Timothy, who ran track at Colorado State University.

Michael Charles Andrew is an American competitive swimmer and an Olympic gold medalist. He was the 2016 world champion in the 100 meter individual medley. At his first Olympic Games, the 2020 Summer Olympics, he won a gold medal and set a world record as part of the 4x100 meter medley relay, placed fourth in the 100 meter breaststroke, fourth in the 50 meter freestyle, and fifth in the 200 meter individual medley. Andrew's swims in 2021 at the 2020 Olympics made him the first swimmer to represent the United States at an Olympic Games in an individual breaststroke event as well as another individual event other than an individual medley in the then-125-year-history of swimming at the Summer Olympics. Kieran Smith is an American swimmer specializing in freestyle and individual medley events. He currently co-holds short course world records in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay and the 4×100-meter medley relay. He is the Americas record holder in the long course 400-meter freestyle and the American record holder in the 500-yard freestyle. In the 400-meter freestyle, he won the bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics and the gold medal at the 2022 World Short Course Championships. Shaine Casas is an American professional swimmer. He is an Americas record holder in the short course 4×50 meter medley relay, swimming the butterfly leg of the relay. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships, he won the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke, a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke, and placed seventh in the 50-meter backstroke. In 2022, at the year's World Aquatics Championships, he won the bronze medal in the 200-metre backstroke. Later in the year, at the 2022 World Short Course Championships, he won the silver medal in the 200-metre backstroke and placed fourth in the finals of the 100-meter individual medley and 200-meter individual medley.

Ellen Walshe is an Irish swimmer. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 100 metre butterfly and the 200 metre individual medley. At the 2021 World Swimming Championships, she won the silver medal in the 400 metre individual medley. She was the first swimmer representing Ireland to win a medal higher than a bronze medal at a World Swimming Championships. Collegiately, she competes for the Tennessee Volunteers.

Youssef Ramadan is an Egyptian swimmer. He is an African record holder in the short course 4×50 metre medley relay and 4×100 metre medley relay, where he swam butterfly leg on both relays. He competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 100 metre butterfly, placing sixteenth in the semifinals. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships, he placed fourth in the 100 metre butterfly and thirteenth in the 100 metre freestyle. At the 2022 World Short Course Championships, he placed eighth in the final of the 100 metre butterfly and tenth in the semifinals of the 100 metre freestyle and the 50 metre butterfly. In 2023, he won the NCAA Division I Championships title in the 100 yard butterfly.

Gretchen Walsh is an American competitive swimmer and the world record holder in the 100 meter butterfly, 4×100 medley relay, and mixed gender 4×100 medley relay. She won the silver medal in the 100 meter butterfly at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where she also set the Olympic record in the 100 meter butterfly in the semifinals with a time of 55.38. She additionally holds one world junior record in the mixed gender 4×100 medley relay event, as well as American records in the 50 meter butterfly, 4×100 meter freestyle relay, 4×100 meter medley relay, 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly, 100 yard backstroke, 4×50 yard freestyle relay, 4×50 yard medley relay, 4×100 yard freestyle relay, and 4×100 yard medley relay.

Trenton Jeffrey Julian is an American competitive swimmer. He is a world record holder in the short course 4×200 meter freestyle relay and 4×100 meter medley relay. He won a gold medal in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the 2019 World University Games. He followed up with gold medals in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the 2021 World Short Course Championships, 2022 World Aquatic Championships, and 2022 World Short Course Championships. In the 4×100 meter medley relay, he won a world title and gold medal at the 2022 World Short Course Championships, swimming butterfly on each the prelims and finals relay.

Gianluca Urlando is an American competitive swimmer. He is the American record holder in the men's 100 yard backstroke and a world junior record holder in the men's 4×200 meter freestyle relay and the 4×100 meter mixed freestyle relay. As a sophomore in the NCAA for the Georgia Bulldogs at the 2022 NCAA Division I Championships, he became the first person to swim the 100 yard backstroke and 100 yard butterfly each in less than 44 seconds. At the 2019 World Junior Championships, he won gold medals in the 200 meter freestyle, 200 meter butterfly, 4×100 meter freestyle relay, 4×200 meter freestyle relay, and 4×100 meter mixed freestyle relay.
