Steven C. Krane (January 20, 1957 – June 22, 2010) was an American lawyer who was, at age 44, the youngest president of the New York State Bar Association, and died at the age of 53. A lawyer or attorney is a person who practices law, as an advocate, attorney, attorney at law, barrister, barrister-at-law, bar-at-law, civil law notary, counsel, counselor, counsellor, counselor at law, solicitor, chartered legal executive, or public servant preparing, interpreting and applying law, but not as a paralegal or charter executive secretary. Working as a lawyer involves the practical application of abstract legal theories and knowledge to solve specific individualized problems, or to advance the interests of those who hire lawyers to perform legal services.

The goals of the association are to cultivate the science of jurisprudence; to promote reform in the law; to facilitate the administration of justice, and to elevate the standards of integrity, honor, professional skill, and courtesy in the legal profession.

Krane grew up in Far Rockaway, Queens, and graduated from SUNY Stony Brook in 1978, and New York University School of Law in 1981. [1] [4] He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at SUNY Stony Brook. [6]

He also clerked for New York Court of Appeals Judge Judith Kaye from 1984 to 1985. [1] [4] [6] In 2007, he was nominated for a seat on New York's highest court, [7] but then-governor Eliot Spitzer did not appoint him, instead re-appointing Judge Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick to her position. [8]

The Court of Appeals consists of seven judges: the Chief Judge and six Associate Judges who are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the State Senate to 14-year terms. Eliot Spitzer 54th Governor of New York

Eliot Laurence Spitzer is an American politician, attorney, and educator. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 54th Governor of New York from 2007 until 2008.

After serving on both the NYSBA and the American Bar Association houses of delegates, and chair of their ethics committees, Krane was elected the youngest state bar president (at the age of 44) in 2001. [1] [2] [4] [5] [6] His major accomplishments while bar president were the legal response to the September 11 attacks, setting up a program for student loan forgiveness for legal aid and other public service lawyers, and bringing the Model Rules of legal ethics to New York. American Bar Association

The American Bar Association (ABA), founded August 21, 1878, is a voluntary bar association of lawyers and law students, which is not specific to any jurisdiction in the United States. The ABA's most important stated activities are the setting of academic standards for law schools, and the formulation of model ethical codes related to the legal profession. The ABA has 410,000 members. Its national headquarters are in Chicago, Illinois; it also maintains a significant branch office in Washington, D.C.

Krane served on two statewide commissions: the New York State Commission on Public Integrity, [9] and co-chair of the New York Judicial Institute on Professionalism in the Law. [4] [5]

He also taught at the Columbia Law School as an adjunct professor, [3] [5] from 1989 to 1992. [9]

Krane died of a heart attack, at the age of 53, on June 22, 2010. [1] [4] [5]

The New York State Bar Association renamed its fund for young lawyers in public service in honor of Krane. [3]
