Steven Martens (born 25 May 1964 in Lier) is a Belgian sports executive and the ex-CEO of the Royal Belgian Football Association. He obtained a master's degree in classical philology at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and became a top trainer in tennis at the Flemish trainers' school Bloso. [1] In his youth years he played football and tennis. He is a brother of the (socialist) sp.a-politician Bart Martens. [2]

Tennis and football

He became a tennis coach in 1987 within the Belgian Tennis Federation with players as Sabine Appelmans, Laurence Courtois, Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin, Kirsten Flipkens, Xavier Malisse, Olivier Rochus, Kristof Vliegen and Steve Darcis. In 1997 he was awarded the ITF Coach fair play award. [1] Afterwards he became technical coordinator of the (Flemish) VTV training centre from 1998 to 2005, to keep the function of technical director until 2006. [1]

Additionally, Steven Martens was captain from Belgian national tennis teams in the Fed Cup team (1993-1998) [1] and the Davis Cup team. In 2004 he was coach from the national team at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, the tournament at which Justine Henin would win Olympic tennis gold for Belgium. From 2007 on he was active as player director with the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association), the tennis federation of the United Kingdom. [3] There, he was busy with scouting and education from younger players and coaches and he took care of the support and guidance for top players.

Martens was also a regular co-commentator during tennis matches at the Belgian public broadcast VRT. [1]

On 1 May 2011, he was assigned as new Secretary-General (CEO) of the Royal Belgian Football Association, as successor of Jean-Marie Philips. [4] In an interview one year after his entry as Secretary-General he explained his long-term vision to increase the Belgian interest for playing football (also the women's interest) and to improve the Belgian FA's image and Belgian stadiums. [5]

Martens resigned on 9 February 2015 after accusations of bad management and financial losses.

Sarah Pitkowski-Malcor is a former professional tennis player from France. Her career-high singles ranking is world No. 29, which she achieved on 1 November 1999.

Jennifer Capriati defeated Kim Clijsters in the final, 1–6, 6–4, 12–10 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2001 French Open. Clijsters became the first Belgian woman to reach a major singles final, having won an all-Belgian semifinal against Justine Henin for the honor.

Belgium's Justine Henin defeated France's Amélie Mauresmo in the final, 6–3, 6–3 to win the gold medal in Women's Singles tennis at the 2004 Summer Olympics. It was Belgium's only gold medal at the 2004 Games. Henin lost only one set during the tournament. In the bronze medal match, Australia's Alicia Molik defeated Myskina, 6–3, 6–4. The medals were the first in women's singles for Belgium and Australia, and the first for France since 1924. The United States' three-Games gold medal streak at the event ended, with no American players reaching the quarter-finals.

Kirsten "Flipper" Flipkens is a Belgian former professional tennis player and current coach. She reached a career-high ranking of No. 13 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). Flipkens has won one singles title on the WTA Tour, winning the 2012 Tournoi de Québec, as well as seven doubles titles. She also won 13 singles and two doubles titles on the ITF Women's Circuit, and one singles title on the WTA Challenger Tour.

The 2001 Canberra International was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts at the National Sports Club in Canberra, Australia and was part of the Tier III category of the 2001 WTA Tour. It was the inaugural edition of the tournament and was held from 7 through 13 January 2001. The Belgian player Justine Henin won the singles title and earned $27,000 first-prize money.

Marissa Irvin Gould is an American former tennis player and author. She reached her highest singles ranking on August 12, 2002, when she became No. 51 in the world. Her best performance at a major event was reaching the third round of the French Open, which she achieved three straight years from 2003 to 2005.
