Stickybear

Stickybear is a fictional character created by Richard Hefter and an edutainment series starring the character headed by Optimum Resource. The character was a mascot of Weekly Reader Software, [1] a division of Xerox Education Publications. [2]

Software of the series has been released since the early 1980s. [3] software programs originated on the Apple II and were released for IBM PC, [1] Atari 8-bit computers, [4] and Commodore 64. [5]

As of 2008, the most recent Stickybear software was developed for Windows XP/Windows Vista and Mac OS X. [6]

Reception

II Computing listed Stickybear tenth on the magazine's list of top Apple II educational software as of late 1985, based on sales and market-share data. [19]

Peter Mucha of the Houston Chronicle reviewed IBM versions of Stickybear in 1990; Stickybear Opposites received a B−, Stickybear Math received a B, Stickybear Math 2 received a B, Stickybear Alphabet received an A−, and Stickybear Reading received a C. [1]

The New Talking StickyBear Alphabet won the Best Early Education Program 1989 Excellence in Software Award from the Software and Information Industry Association. [20]

Leslie Eiser of Compute! magazine said in a 1992 review that StickyBear Town Builder was dated compared to other games of its time. [21]

Computer Gaming World in 1993 said of Stickybear's Early Learning Activities, "In the world of early learning software, it's difficult to find anyone who does it better." [22]

IBM PC compatible computers are similar to the original IBM PC, XT, and AT, all from computer giant IBM, that are able to use the same software and expansion cards. Such computers were referred to as PC clones, IBM clones or IBM PC clones. The term "IBM PC compatible" is now a historical description only, since IBM no longer sells personal computers after it sold its personal computer division in 2005 to Chinese technology company Lenovo. The designation "PC", as used in much of personal computer history, has not meant "personal computer" generally, but rather an x86 computer capable of running the same software that a contemporary IBM PC could. The term was initially in contrast to the variety of home computer systems available in the early 1980s, such as the Apple II, TRS-80, and Commodore 64. A computing platform, digital platform, or software platform is an environment in which software is executed. Originally, the word computing was synonymous with counting and calculating, and the science and technology of mathematical calculations. The program was part of a larger set of dialects and implementations created by Seymour Papert aimed at triggering the development of abstract ideas by children through experimentation.

The history of the personal computer as a mass-market consumer electronic device began with the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s. A personal computer is one intended for interactive individual use, as opposed to a mainframe computer where the end user's requests are filtered through operating staff, or a time-sharing system in which one large processor is shared by many individuals. After the development of the microprocessor, individual personal computers were low enough in cost that they eventually became affordable consumer goods. Timeworks, Inc., later Timeworks International, Inc., was a private American software publisher active from 1982 to 1994 and based in Chicago, Illinois. The company primarily sold entry-level productivity software, as well as advanced desktop publishing applications and video games. They are perhaps best known for Publisher, their flagship desktop publishing application. In 1993, they were acquired by Megalode Resources, Inc., of Burlington, Ontario, who operated the company until 1994.

Brian P. Dougherty is an American software developer and businessman best known as the founder and CEO of Berkeley Softworks, which produced the pioneering GEOS graphical operating system for the Commodore 64 in 1986 and the influential PC/GEOS operating system for the IBM PCs and compatibles in 1990. Dougherty also founded GlobalPC, Airset and Wink Communications. While Dougherty was CEO of GeoWorks, he had been approached by several large technology companies including Microsoft and Apple because of the success of the GEOS operating system. Brian attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated with a B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science. When he graduated he landed a job at Mattel, where he contributed for the design of the Intellivision video game system.

Berkeley Softworks, Inc., later GeoWorks Corporation, was an American software-development company founded by American computing engineer and former Mattel employee Brian P. Dougherty in 1983. It is best known for its GEOS operating systems for GEOS for the Commodore 64, 64c, plus 4, Apple II and the c128 and PC/GEOS, also known as GeoWorks ensemble or simply GeoWorks. The company ceased operations in 2003 after it was bought by various other companies.
