Jan Christoffel Greyling "Stoffel" Botha (1929–1998) was a South African lawyer and politician. He was a member of the National Party,served as member of Parliament (elected representative of the Eshowe constituency in 1974),administrator of Natal Province (1979–1984),Minister of Home Affairs (1985–1989) in the P.W. Botha government. [1]
A lawyer by profession,he began his professional career in Johannesburg before starting a political career.
He was appointed administrator of the Natal province in 1979. He was the provincial head of the National Party when State President P.W. Botha named him to the government in 1984 first as Minister of Education,then as Minister of Home Affairs and later the Post and Telecommunications portfolio was added to his duties.
In 1989,he announced his retirement from political life for health reasons and,despite bypass surgery,he died of heart failure at age 69 in 1998.

The Tricameral Parliament,officially the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa,was the legislature of South Africa between 1984 and 1994,established by the South African Constitution of 1983,which gave a limited political voice to the country's Coloured and Indian population groups. The majority African population group was however still excluded,their interests notionally represented in the governments of the black homelands,or "bantustans",of which they were formally citizens. As the bantustans were largely politically impotent,its principal effect was to further entrench the political power of the White section of the South African population.

The State Security Council (SSC) was formed in South Africa in 1972 to advise the government on the country's national policy and strategy concerning security,its implementation and determining security priorities. After the 1994 elections a committee called National Intelligence Co-ordinating Committee was formed to advise the South African president on security and intelligence as well as its implementation.

Botha,and was later appointed ambassador to the United States. After the end of apartheid,he joined the African National Congress in 2001.

To be able to lead the party,Reddy relinquished some of his business interests. Another important party member was Pat Poovalingam,the chairman of weekly newspaper "The Graphic". Solidarity appealed more to South Africans with Southern Indian roots,while Amichand Rajbansi's National People's Party appealed more to those with a North Indian heritage.
