Stroud's is a restaurant in the Kansas City metropolitan area, in the United States. The business was named one of "America's Classics" by the James Beard Foundation Awards. [1]
Guy and Helen Stroud started a BBQ restaurant on the county line at 85th and Troost. [2] When beef was rationed during World War II, the restaurant began serving a pan-fried chicken dinner for 35 cents. [2] [3] Other menu items at this time included long end ribs for 15 cents and goose livers for 10 cents. [4]
In 1977, Mike Donegan and Jim Hogan purchased the restaurant and inherited some of the original recipes. [2] [4]
In 1983, Mike Donegan, his twin brother, Dennis Donegan, and Jim Hogan purchased a northern site called Oak Ridge Manor. [2] Oak Ridge Manor is inside a restored 1840s log cabin. [3] They purchased a third location in Wichita, Kansas in 1992. [2] In 2006, the original location closed to eminent domain. [2] [3] [5]
Hogan sold his share in 2000, and the Donegan family remained in the business until Mike Donegan's death in 2021. [3]
Stroud's is best known for their pan-fried chicken. [3] [6] Other popular dishes include fried catfish, homemade chicken noodle soup, and cinnamon rolls. [3]
