The Students' Union of Obafemi Awolowo University, popularly addressed as Great Ife Students' Union, is the leading and most vibrant Students' Union in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa. The Obafemi Awolowo University Students' Union is the body of the over thirty-five thousand students of the first class Nigerian University. [1]

The Students' Union is known for defending students' rights around Africa. On 11 March 2010, the Students' Union, led by Alaje A. Paul, President of the organization at the time, participated in a protest in F.C.T. Abuja. This was in defense of sections S144 and 145 of the Nigerian Constitution.

Past leaders of the Students' Union include Anthony Fashayo, Lanre Legacy, Ola Diamonds, Akinola Saburi, Deviano, Paul Alaje, Fredrick Joel, Ibikunle Isaac, and Akande Omotayo.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is a federal Government-owned university that is located in the ancient city of Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. The university was founded in 1961 and classes commenced in October 1962 as the University of Ife by the regional government of Western Nigeria, which was led by Samuel Ladoke Akintola. It was renamed "Obafemi Awolowo University" on 12 May 1987 in honour of Obafemi Awolowo (1909–1987), the first premier of the Western Region of Nigeria, whose idea the university was.

The Obafemi Awolowo University massacre was a mass murder of students of Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria on 10 July 1999. Five students of OAU were killed and eleven injured.

Olusegun Rahman Mimiko ; born 3 October 1954), is a Nigerian doctor and politician, he was the senatorial candidate of the Zenith Labour Party for Ondo Central District in the 2019 Senate elections. He served as the 16th, and fifth civilian, Governor of Ondo State, Nigeria, from February 2009 to February 2017. The first two-term governor of Ondo state and the first Labour Party governor in Nigeria. Adebayo Simeon Bamire is a Nigerian academic and professor of agricultural economics who is the 12th substantial Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, since 2022. He previously served as deputy vice chancellor academics.

Gbemisola Adeoti is a Nigerian Academic and poet. He is a professor of literature in the English Department at Obafemi Awolowo University. He is the author of Naked Soles which was at a time recommended by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board. Between 2011 and 2015, he served as the Director of the Institute of Cultural Studies, and he was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 2015 to 2019 at OAU.

Anthony Olusegun Adegbulugbe is a Nigerian professor of Energy Planning and Management, notable for his significant contributions to Nigeria's energy industry. Adegbulugbe served as a special adviser on Energy to Former President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria. He was a Member of the National Economic Management Team, and the Chairman of the National Gas to Power initiative between 2005 and 2007. Adegbulugbe was a contributor to the inter-governmental panel on Climate change (IPCC) Assessments reports which won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize along with former US Vice President Al Gore. He has played a crucial role in shaping energy policies in Nigeria.

Charles Udenze Ilegbune, SAN is a Nigerian professor of law at the University of Abuja and a senior advocate of Nigeria. He is a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of University of Nigeria Nsukka where he also served as the Dean and head of department of the faculty of law. He is a member of African Bar Association, a recipient of Order of the Niger. He is also the founder and Principal Partner of Ilegbune & Ilegbune & Co. Enugu.
