Sue Brannan Walker,(born 1940) is a poet,author and editor. [1] In 2015 she is the Stokes Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing at the University of South Alabama. She is a former Poet Laureate of Alabama [2] [3]
Walker studied at the University of Alabama,earning a B.S. She then earned an MEd,M.A. and PhD at Tulane University.
Walker worked as an assistant professor in the English department at the University of South Alabama in 1980. She founded the literary journal Negative capability in 1981 [4] and served as its editor. [5]
Walker became an associate professor at the University of South Alabama in 1985 and a full professor in 1991. In 1999 she chaired the department,and 2007 was named Stokes Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing.
From 2003 to 2012,Walker served as the poet laureate of Alabama. [2] She is the author of five poetry collections. [6]
Walker created Negative Capability Press,a small press publishing house which is based in Mobile,Alabama. [7] [8] [9] The company has published more than 40 books,many by nationally recognized authors and poets. [10] A number of these were collections for which Walker served as editor,including Ways of Knowing:Essays on Marge Piercy in 1991,Life on the Line:Selections on Words and Healing in 1992,and Whatever Remembers Us:An Anthology of Alabama Poetry in 2007. Several of the books have received notable recognition:Irene Latham's What Came Before (2007) won the Independent Book Award in Poetry in 2007 and John Davis Jr.'s work was included in the 2015 Poetry House exhibit in New York City. [11] The publisher sponsors an annual international book contest; [12] the prize in 2015 was $2000 and a publishing contract.
As 2012,Walker continued to head up the organization. [13]
Sir Andrew Motion is an English poet,novelist,and biographer,who was Poet Laureate from 1999 to 2009. During the period of his laureateship,Motion founded the Poetry Archive,an online resource of poems and audio recordings of poets reading their own work. Rita Frances Dove is an American poet and essayist. From 1993 to 1995,she served as Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. She is the first African American to have been appointed since the position was created by an act of Congress in 1986 from the previous "consultant in poetry" position (1937–86). Dove also received an appointment as "special consultant in poetry" for the Library of Congress's bicentennial year from 1999 to 2000. Dove is the second African American to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry,in 1987,and she served as the Poet Laureate of Virginia from 2004 to 2006. Since 1989,she has been teaching at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville,where she held the chair of Commonwealth Professor of English from 1993 to 2020;as of 2020 she holds the chair of Henry Hoyns Professor of Creative Writing.
Naomi Long Madgett was an American poet and publisher. Originally a teacher,she later found fame with her award-winning poems and was also the founder and senior editor of Lotus Press,established in 1972,a publisher of poetry books by black poets. Known as "the godmother of African-American poetry",she was the Detroit poet laureate since 2001.

Jake Adam York was an American poet. Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda was named Poet Laureate of Virginia by the Governor,Tim Kaine,on June 26,2006. She succeeded Rita Dove and served in this position from June 2006 –July 2008. While serving as Poet Laureate,Carolyn started the "Poetry Book Giveaway Project" and added the "Poets Spotlight" to her webpage highlighting one poet from the Commonwealth each month,in addition to traveling widely to promote poetry in every corner of Virginia.
The Kingsley and Kate Tufts Poetry Awards are a pair of American prizes based at Claremont Graduate University. They are given to poets for their collections of poetry written in the English language,by a citizen or legal resident alien of the United States.
Kathleen Flenniken is an American writer,poet,editor,and educator. In 2012,she was named the Poet Laureate of Washington. She has been honored with a 2012 Pushcart Prize,as well as fellowships with the Artist Trust,and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her collection of poetry titled Famous,received the 2005 Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry. Her following work,Plume,was honored with the 2013 Washington State Book Award.
