Sugarfactory's building is a former sugar refinery. [3] This building and the rest of the street block between Stadsschouwburg, Lijnbaansgracht and Leidsegracht has been used by De Granaatappel as sugar refinery since at least 1854. [4] [3] After multiple city expansions, by 1920 the refinery found itself located in what was now the centre of Amsterdam. This and the competition and crisis after World War I, led to the refinery shutting down and selling its equipment and buildings in September 1920. [4] The building on the Lijnbaansgracht was bought by cookie company De Lindeboom . By the late 1970s, the building was renovated to provide studio spaces for art and later theatre rehearsals. [4] [2] In 2005, Sugarfactory acquired the building and positioned itself as an alternative nightspot. [2] [3] Manne van der Zee became director of Sugarfactory in 2012. [3] The club was recognised by Shamiro van der Geld, night mayor of Amsterdam, as "that other club" in addition to the big two (Melkweg and Paradiso). [3]

The Tabakspanden are a group of buildings standing on the Spuistraat in central Amsterdam, adjacent to the Keizerrijk and Wijdesteeg alleyways. Named after a former owner, the speculator Hendrik Tabak, they were mostly squatted from 1983 onwards, although the artist Peter Klashorst also rented an apartment and gallery space. The best known building was Spuistraat 199, known as the Slangenpand (Snakehouse) because of the large mural which covered the front exterior. In 2015, the squatters were evicted and the buildings were mostly demolished prior to redevelopment. The new project is known as De Keizer and has 69 apartments, a restaurant and a gallery. Two of the buildings are registered as rijksmonumenten.

The Halfweg sugar factory is a now defunct beet sugar factory previously known as "Suikerfabriek Holland". It closed down in 1992 and was then repurposed to become 'Sugar City', an area with offices, retail shops and an event venue. The terrain measures 11 hectares, and is hemmed in by the Haarlemmerstraatweg (N200), the Ringvaart of the Haarlemmermeer polder, and the wide part of the Ringvaart that leads to the sluices and the former Zijkanaal F. Halfweg village is on the other side of the wide part of the Ringvaart.
