Wicked Jazz Sounds is a Dutch music collective and event organizer located in Amsterdam founded in 2002. [1]
In May 2002, DJs Phil Horneman and Manne van der Zee organised their first WJS event. It took place at Aknathon, in Amsterdam. [1]
Horneman had previously used the Wicked Jazz Sounds name for a show on the Amstelveen local radio station, starting in 1998. [2] [1]
Later in 2002, weekly clubnights began taking place at Club 020 (now Club Zyon). [3] WJS organised a special event in March 2004 featuring electronic music by 4hero. [4]
In 2005, WJS moved to Sugarfactory. [1] [5] Their 10 year anniversary was celebrated in May 2012 with an event at Melkweg, which was broadcast live on NPO Radio 6. [5] Earlier that year, the record label Wicked Jazz Sounds Recordings was created, starting with the debut album of Kris Berry. [6] [5]
The collective announced in December 2018 that their 14-year tennure at Sugarfactory would come to an end, due to uncertainty over the venue's future, moving their events across the street to Melkweg instead. [7] [8] The Sugarfactory venue filed for bankruptcy in January 2019. [9]

Johnny Jordaan was the pseudonym for Johannes Hendricus van Musscher, a Dutch singer of popular music, in particular the genre known as levenslied, a Dutch variety of the French chanson. The Dutch squatting ban refers to the law introduced on 1 October 2010, under which squatting in the Netherlands became de jure illegal. Criminalization had first been proposed in the 1970s, but was opposed by the Council of Churches. In 2006, a new plan was proposed and backed by parties including VVD and PVV. When the new law was introduced, squatters occupied the former head office of the fire brigade and there were riots in Amsterdam and Nijmegen. In 2011, the Supreme Court of the Netherlands ruled that the legally forced end of squatting can only occur after an intervention of a judge. Between October 2010 and December 2014, 529 people were arrested for the act of occupying derelict buildings, in 213 separate incidents as a result of which 39 people were jailed.
Wibautstraat is an underground metro station in the city centre of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Served by metro lines 51, 53 and 54 of the Amsterdam Metro, the station was constructed with the cut-and-cover method. It was opened on 16 October 1977. The station consists of two station halls with two entrances each. The 155-metre-long (509 ft) island platform is between the two halls. The station was renovated in 2010 and 2018.
KunstRAI is an annual art fair for modern and contemporary art held at the RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre in Amsterdam, Netherlands, every May. From 2006 to 2011 it was known as Art Amsterdam. Amsterdam Metalfest is a biannual metalfestival that takes place in the Netherlands' capital city, Amsterdam. As from 2015, it is held in the much acclaimed venue Melkweg and organised by Metal Amsterdam. We Are Here is a collective of migrants based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, which campaigns for human rights for its members and all undocumented migrants. The asylum seekers have in many cases had their applications to remain in the Netherlands denied but they either cannot go back or refuse to return to their country of origin. They demand access to social services such as medical care and housing. The group formed in 2012 and by 2015 contained over 200 migrants from around 15 countries.

In the evening of 6 July 2021, Dutch investigative journalist and crime reporter Peter R. de Vries was shot in the head after leaving the television studio of RTL Boulevard in Amsterdam where he had appeared as a guest. Several bullets were fired at him in the Lange Leidsedwarsstraat, near the Leidseplein, while he was walking to his car. He was taken to the VU University Medical Center in critical condition. De Vries died of his injuries on 15 July 2021.
