Sujan R. Chinoy (born 1958) is a former Indian diplomat currently serving as the Director General of the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses (IDSA),India's foremost think-tank in New Delhi in the field of defence,security and international relations. [1] The appointment followed his retirement from the Indian Foreign Service on 30 September 2018 after a professional diplomatic career spanning more than thirty-seven years with experience on China and East Asia,as well as the Asia-Pacific region,the Gulf and OIC,United Nations (Disarmament and International Security),National Security,as well as the US and the Latin American region. He held the highest rank of Grade I Ambassador (equivalent to Vice Minister/Secretary to the Government of India). He was also a member of the prestigious Padma award selection committee 2023.
He was the Indian Ambassador to Japan from 2015-2018. [2] He was also the Indian Ambassador to the Republic of the Marshall Islands. He facilitated the visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Japan in 2016 and 2018 as well as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visits to India in 2015 and 2017. He contributed to the realization of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Major developments took place during his tenure,including the conclusion of the Shinkansen (Bullet Train/Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail) project,the Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement,the Japanese vocational training centers in India (Japan India Institutes of Manufacturing or "JIMs"),the placement of young Indian professionals in Japanese companies under Japan's Technical Intern Training Programme (TITP) and areas such as healthcare,digital technologies,start-ups,agriculture,food processing,disaster risk reduction,space sciences,earth sciences,oceanography and defence cooperation.
During his term in Japan,India emerged as Japan's largest ODA partner and Japan became one of the top three investors in the Indian economy with a presence in manufacturing,financial markets,acquisitions and mergers,logistics and start ups. Japan participated on key infrastructure projects in India,besides being linked to major flagship initiatives such as Smart City,Swachh Bharat (Clean India),Digital India,Start Up India,Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission,etc.
Chinoy served as Indian Ambassador to Mexico [3] and High Commissioner of India to Belize from 2012 to 2015. He was Additional Secretary in the National Security Council Secretariat in the Prime Minister's Office in New Delhi for several years. He also served for many years as India's Consul General in China (Shanghai) and Australia (Sydney) handling trade and economic portfolios.
Chinoy was born to Romeshchandra Chinoy,a senior Indian Police Service officer and Usha Chinoy (née Joshi),a well-known musician, [4] social worker and educationist;taught at the Rajkumar College,Rajkot . Usha Chinoy's grandfather,Vaidya Shastri Manishankar Govindji (Maṇicaṅkar Kōvintaji), [5] founded the Ayurveda firm Atank Nigrah Pharmacy [6] in Jamnagar in 1881. The Atank Nigrah Pharmacy was an early multi-national company,with branches in Singapore,Penang (Malaysia),Rangoon (Burma),Colombo (Sri Lanka) and Karachi (in the then undivided India),apart from major cities in India. Chinoy's paternal grandfather,Barrister C. N. Chinoy, [7] was a two-term Dewan (Prime Minister) of the state of Rajkot during the 1930s-1940s after whom the pre-Independence "Infantry Road" in the old Cantonment area of Rajkot was renamed "Barrister Chinoy Road". [8] Chinoy has two sisters,Dr. Parasmani Acharya [9] and Dr. Mala R. Chinoy. [10] Chinoy is a direct descendant of Seth Nanji Jekaran Shah (later Seth Nanji Chinai of Mangrol),an early Jain trader from Mangrol in coastal Saurashtra in Western India who founded the Gujarati community in Kolkata and was also the first Gujarati trader in Shanghai,and lived there for twelve years in the opening decades of the 19th century. The 200-year old Jain Derasar (Temple) in the town of Palitana in the Shatrunjay Mountain Range (in Gujarat),well known as ‘Nanji Chinai’s Chaumukhji Derasar’,was built with donations by Sujan Chinoy's ancestor Seth Nanji Jekaran Shah. This Derasar’s main Jain Tirthankar (nayak) is Chandraprabhu and it has 21 marble statues/idols and one metal statue/idol of each of the various Tirthankars of Jainism.
Chinoy was educated at the Rajkumar College,Rajkot (1965–74),where he excelled in the school's orchestra (sitar) and was a member of the rifle shooting team. He did his BA (Hons.) in English Literature and Psychology and Diploma in German from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda,and,his MBA in Marketing from B.K. School of Business Management,Gujarat University,Ahmedabad. He represented his university/district in athletics,rifle-shooting,swimming and bodybuilding. He is also an accomplished rider who has pursued horse-back riding,tent-pegging and show jumping as a hobby. While at the university,Chinoy was a Senior Under Officer in the Infantry Wing of the National Cadet Corps and completed his "C" Certificate,including a special high-altitude ski course at the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering in Gulmarg. He participated in the All India Inter-University Rifle Shooting Championship held in Chennai in 1976. He was offered a direct commission in the Indian Army but preferred to pursue post-graduate studies and join the Indian Foreign Service in 1981.
He is fluent in Chinese (Mandarin) [11] and has a degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. [12] [13] He also knows French,German,Japanese, [14] Arabic,Spanish [15] and French Creole,besides Gujarati,Hindi and Urdu. He was an exchange student at the Otemon Gakuin University in Osaka,Japan in 1978.
Chinoy organised the largest gathering of Yoga enthusiasts outside of India for the event marking the International Yoga Day on 21 May 2015 in Mexico City which witnessed about 6000 participants on the broad Reforma Avenue. [16] [17] He gave a sitar performance on 2 October 2013,playing Mahatma Gandhiji's favourite bhajans Raghupati Raghav Rajaram and Vaishnava Jana To,to mark Gandhi Jayanti in Mexico City. [18] He has performed a cameo role in a Gujarati Film titled Sorath No Sinh Chelbhai. [19] At the time of his retirement,he was the senior-most career Ambassador of the Indian Foreign Service overseas,as well as the country's only Gujarati Ambassador.

Kathiawar is a peninsula,near the far north of India's west coast,of about 61,000 km2 (23,500 sq mi) bordering the Arabian Sea. It is bounded by the Gulf of Kutch in the northwest and by the Gulf of Khambhat in the east. In the northeast,it is connected to the rest of Gujarat and borders on the low,fertile hinterland of Ahmedabad. It is crossed by two belts of hill country and is drained radially by nine rivers which have little natural flow aside from in monsoon months,thus dams have been built on some of these. Kathiawar ports have been flourishing centres of trade and commerce since at least the 16th century.
Junagadh is the city and headquarters of Junagadh district in the Indian state of Gujarat. Located at the foot of the Girnar hills,355 kilometres (221 mi) southwest of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar,it is the seventh largest city in the state.
Saurashtra,also known as Kathiawar,is a peninsular region of Gujarat,India,located on the Arabian Sea coast. It covers about a third of Gujarat state,notably 11 districts of Gujarat,including Rajkot District. It was formerly a state of India before it merged with Bombay state. In 1961 it separated from Bombay and joined Gujarat.

Rajkot is the 35th-largest metropolitan area in India,with a population of more than 2 million as of 2021. Rajkot is the 6th cleanest city of India,and it is the 7th fastest-growing city in the world as of March 2021. The city contains the administrative headquarters of the Rajkot District,245 km from the state capital Gandhinagar,and is located on the banks of the Aji and Nyari rivers. Rajkot was the capital of the Saurashtra State from 15 April 1948 to 31 October 1956,before its merger with Bombay State on 1 November 1956. Rajkot was reincorporated into Gujarat State on 1 May 1960.
Mehsana,also spelled Mahesana,is a city and municipality in Mehsana district,in the Indian state of Gujarat. Established in 14th century,the city was under Gaekwads of Baroda State from 18th century to the independence of India in 1947. The municipality was established in 1919–20. The town has population of about 185,000. Dairy,oil and natural gas are major industries while there are several small and medium enterprises in the city.

Jainism has had a notable following in Gujarat. According to the 2011 Census of India,around 0.959% of the population of Gujarat is Jain. There are several old Jain temples that draw pilgrims from Jains around the world in places such as Palitana,Taranga,Sankheshwar,Idar.
The Gujarati people, or Gujaratis,are an Indo-Aryan ethnolinguistic group who reside in or can trace their ancestry or heritage to a region of the Indian subcontinent primarily centered in the present-day western Indian state of Gujarat. They primarily speak Gujarati,an Indo-Aryan language. While Gujaratis mainly inhabit Gujarat,they have a diaspora worldwide. Gujaratis in India and the diaspora are prominent entrepreneurs and industrialists and maintain high social capital. Many notable independence activists were Gujarati,including Mahatma Gandhi and Vallabhbhai Patel.
Vasant Vasudeo Paranjpe was an Indian diplomat and an expert on China. In 1947,he came to China to study the Chinese language at Beijing University. He later worked in China,until 1957. He served as the interpreter when Nehru visited China and served as the interpreter between the Indian and Chinese delegations,translating directly between Jawaharlal Nehru and Mao Zedong in 1954. From 1974 to 1976 he was ambassador to Addis Ababa. In 1977 he was made India's ambassador to South Korea. Presented credentials on February 6,1978 in Seoul.

The credit for introducing Jainism to the West goes to a German scholar,Hermann Jacobi,who translated some Jain literature and published it in the series 'Sacred Books of East' in 1884. In Europe,the largest Jain populations are in Britain,with a population of about 25,000.
Kumarpal Balabhai Desai is an author,critic,editor,journalist,columnist and translator from Gujarat,India. He studied and later taught at the Gujarat University. He is associated with several social and Gujarati literary organisations such as Gujarati Sahitya Parishad. He has written and edited more than hundred books including biographies and several works on Jainism. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2004.
Kutch Museum is located in Bhuj,Kutch (Kachchh) district of Gujarat,India. It is the oldest museum of Gujarat which was founded in 1877. It is located opposite Hamirsar Lake. The museum was earlier known as Fergusson Museum.
Nanji Kalidas Mehta,MBE was an Indian industrialist and philanthropist from Gujarat. He found the Mehta Group in British East Africa,with its head office in India. Known as Sheth Nanjibhai. His son Mahendra Mehta,daughter in-law Sunayana Mehta and grandson Jay Mehta now own the Mehta Group
Kevi Rite Jaish is a 2012 Indian Gujarati-language drama film directed by Abhishek Jain and produced by Nayan Jain. The film is a satire on the fascination and obsession of the Patels' –a Gujarati farmer community –migration to the U.S. Over the last half century,thousands of Patels have migrated to the US and have come to dominate its motel industry. The film stars Divyang Thakkar,Veronica Kalpana-Gautam,Tejal Panchasara,Kenneth Desai,and Anang Desai. The success of the film started a "new wave" in Gujarati cinema.
